A Slightly Crazy Session: Louie, Bitsy, Reese & Blackie

Monday, February 4th, 2013

This was… ahem… an eventful session! Don’t get me wrong – it was lots of fun, the dogs were total sweethearts, and their parents are wonderful people! – but a few road bumps near the beginning of our session made for slightly slow-going at first. In fact, the issues were pretty unpredictable, and Cheri & Jim (the dogs’ parents) were nice enough to send me an email after the session which read:

Hi Allison! We figured out that you would probably add a few questions to your questionnaire after today:

1. Does your dog have any type of training at all?  Any? Obedience? Potty? Leash? Anything?

2. Is your dog likely to pee/poop/vomit in my studio?

3. Is there any chance that all of your dogs will be able to pull out of their collars at once on a busy street in downtown Pensacola?

4. Will your dogs ever look at a camera, for any reason?

5. If not, do you mind having hundreds of photos of your dogs asses?

Haha! I love it when my clients have a sense of humor! Yes, our session was chaotic, the dogs’ strong suit was not obedience, and we used up our fair share of paper towels. But Cheri & Jim, I think you’ll be in for a surprise when you see the photos we still (somehow) managed to get!

This is Louie, in the foreground. He’s a rescue from a puppy mill, and has the notch in his ear to prove it, poor thing. But with Cheri & Jim, he’s learning how to be a dog and not just a breeding machine. Thank goodness they saved him – look at that sweet face!

A dachshund looks at the camera for a photo in front of an old historic doorfront.

This is Bitsy, an old chihuahua whom Cheri & Jim found on the streets. Her cataract remains, but she used to be in much worse shape: thoroughly flea-ridden and diseased. They nursed her back to health and now she’s a happy (if slow-moving) member of their family!

A chihuahua with a cataract in her eye poses for a photo in the studio.

Here’s Reese, a cute girl who seriously knew how to work the camera! Her back legs don’t work so well, but she tries not to let that slow her down at all – she is such a sweetheart, and a kisser too!

Last but certainly not least is Blackie, the doxie-beagle mix. Can you believe that he used to have a wheelchair for his back legs? We brought him to the beach, and suddenly he was zooming around everywhere! The boy loves the sand, I guess!

A doxie dog runs across the sand, ears flying.

Cheri & Jim’s house has been dubbed The Isle of Misfit Toys, because each of their dogs comes from unfortunate circumstances, and some still bear the scars of their past lives. But together, they make an incredibly beautiful family, inside & out. Thank you so much for allowing me to meet your pack – and Happy Birthday, Jim! :) I can’t wait to see you both again soon!

Pensacola Chihuahua Photography: Rocco & Vegas

Wednesday, January 16th, 2013

So, remember yesterday’s post about session winners from Gallery Night last year? Turns out, this session also came about through a drawing, and it’s been in the works even longer – since September!! I know, that’s a long time – maybe the longest I’ve ever gone from meeting the owner to having the session – but we were delayed by sickness, out-of-town trips, holiday craziness, and little Vegas even had an infection in his paw for a while, poor thing. But despite the odds (who knew they would be so steep?) I finally got to meet Rocco and Vegas, chihuahua brothers that belong to the owner of Legacy Event Design!

So first of all, I absolutely have to mention that if you’re planning a wedding in the Pensacola, Darrin (these guys’ dad) is your best source of all things planning-related. He was telling me about a few fabulous events he’s done, and I can’t recommend him highly enough! This guy knows his stuff and I know he’d be a huge asset to any wedding.

But in the meantime, our focus was on his pups – and they are awesome little guys! Rocco is a 14-year-old Mexican immigrant (yes really) and a ball of curious energy. Vegas, only 1 year old, prefers to stick close to his dad and watch the trouble Rocco causes! I loved working with them both, so enough talk, on to the photos!

I looooove the mischevious look in Rocco’s eyes! Vegas has a lock on the best head tilt, though, for sure.

When you work with a wedding planner, you have access to some fun props! The boys each took their turn on the ivories and it was super-cute!

Darrin – thanks for being so wonderfully flexible and patient to finally have your session! I can’t wait to see you all again soon!

Dog Days of Summer 2012 – the First Annual Event!

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

When I was first asked to be on the planning committee for Dog Days of Summer, I had NO IDEA what a huge event and ridiculous amount of fun it would turn out to be! (Plus, all the planning meetings at La Hacienda Mexican restaurant were pretty delicious/wonderful too.) We designed the day to be similar to the Gulf Breeze Pet Fest or Pensacola’s huge Barktoberfest, but with one big difference: all proceeds would benefit the American Cancer Society. Human & canine cancer is so prevalent and any donation we could make would be worth the effort – so after several months of planning, August 18 was the big day! And guess what: the results are in, and we raised over $1000 for the American Cancer Society! YAY!

This post is full of just a few dogs from that day who stopped by to say hello! These photos will also be used to make a 2013 calendar, the proceeds from which will also benefit the American Cancer Society. (If you keep scrolling down, you’ll see some of the funny themes and props we put together for each month!) Stay tuned to the blog and the Facebook page for more info on how to get your copy!

Let’s start with a photo of the head organizer’s dog! This is Rusty, Becky’s boy, and he’s only about a year old – but I photographed him when he was a tiny puppy! It was so much fun to see him “all grown up” and much bigger than I remember!

Serious contender for cutest puppy at the event: Fiona the shepherd mix. I think she looks a bit like my Bailey! And WHAT a smile!

Rocky is another one of the organizer’s dogs – you really should check out Premier Pet Grooming if you’re in Milton!

Conway is a chug (chihuahua/pug mix), don’t you love that underbite? And Sonny the lab mix will help us introduce the many props and costumes for each month…

Whew, there are a TON of photos in this post! But if you can’t get enough, check out the full day’s gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com. More importantly, a HUGE thank-you goes out to everyone that came on the 18th, whether it was for several hours or just a short time! We really appreciate your support, and 100% of your donation went to the American Cancer Society! Thank you so much – and be on the lookout for more info about next year’s event!

Miss Ada Mae ~ {Pensacola Pet Photography by Allison Shamrell}

Saturday, August 27th, 2011

Can I be completely honest?

I think this dog is ADORABLE.

Ada Mae (if you missed her Sneak Peek) is 1/4 dachshund, 1/4 rat terrier, and 1/2 chihuahua. And for being a mixture of those breeds, and only a year old, she’s remarkably well-behaved. This little lady (yes, that’s the best word to describe her: lady) kept her mother Nora and I laughing during the entire session. Nora, thanks so much for bringing in your downright charming pup!

Sneak Peek: Ada Mae ~ {Pensacola Pet Photography by Allison Shamrell}

Friday, August 12th, 2011

This session has been a long time in the making! I first met Miss Ada Mae (and her mom, Nora) at an event in Panama City Beach back in March. They’ve kindly kept in touch ever since, and the fabulous duo made the trip 4-hour round trip here to my studio in Pensacola for a session! So I was thrilled to see them again, of course!

Ada Mae is incredibly behaved for a one-year-old dog that’s two parts Chihuahua, one part dachshund, and one part rat terrier (did I get that right Nora?)! Enjoy just a few photos of this lovely girl!

She’s got a big pair of ears for such a small dog!

I think her fur is just beautiful. You can see different colors of spots on her chest!

We tried out a fun new background color!

Thanks again for making the trip, Nora! I hope you both enjoyed your Whataburger on the way home! :)
