Best of 2015 – San Diego Pet Photography

Sunday, January 24th, 2016

Are you ready for this? I cannot WAIT to share these images with you!  :)  :)

2015 was an incredible year for my business: I met incredible people, fantastic dogs, and had a BLAST doing what I absolutely love to do! I’ll always be able to look back on 2015 with a big smile on my face, because although it had its ups and downs (just like any year), I have to admit that there were way more “ups” and happy times than anything else. So of course I couldn’t properly say goodbye to one of the most amazing years of my life without a “Best of” blog post – because I want to share a tiny fraction of how GREAT this year was with you! So I really feel like this blog post contains a piece of my heart… not to wax poetic, but the people and dogs in these photos really do mean the world to me, and I’ll always be grateful that we crossed paths in 2015. Did all these sessions go 100% smoothly? Nope! (Hello rain delays!) Did all these dogs really love being in front of the camera? Definitely not! (Some adored being the center of attention, and some definitely took some warming up!) But I think we still ended up with spectacular results from each & every session, and to me, that’s the most important thing, because then my clients can walk away happy. And I think they all did! :)

So here are all the pets I photographed in full-length photo sessions in 2015. I picked out my 3 favorite images from each session – not the easiest thing to do!! – and for the sake of simplicity, I refrained from sharing the details of each pet’s story here, but you can always search the blog for details on any pet if you’re curious.

Mr. Higgins the Yellow Lab! (La Jolla/Del Mar Pet Photography)

Tuesday, November 10th, 2015

I can’t really describe it, I can’t put my finger on it… but I can tell you this: some sessions are really special. :)

Maybe it was because Mr. Higgins (the handsome yellow lab and star of the show!) was already experienced at posing for the camera! This wasn’t his first photo session, and I think it shows! He was always ready to flash that handsome labrador smile, and his soft yellow coloring amongst the bright blues of the water and sky came together to create a to-die-for combination of colors!

Or maybe it was because the beach is Mr Higgins’ happy place. It’s where he and his mom go every week, to relax, unwind, and chase his ball. Oh, the ball – this is Mr. Higgins’ obsession! He can’t be more than a few inches from his ball at all times, and if the waves sweep it out to sea, he’ll swim out there to get it back! He’s fearless! At one point, we wanted a few photos without the ball, so his mom put it in her bag on the sand – and he promptly ran back, dug it out of her bag and brought it back to us! What a goofball!

Whatever the reason(s) may be, I had a fabulous photo session with Mr. Higgins. And in fact, his mom originally wanted to book my 3-hour session, because she wasn’t sure about how he’d do in a more limited time frame – just like many of my clients! But I reassured her that my one-hour session was probably more than enough time, and that’s what we did – and I have a feeling we’re going to end up with plenty of incredible images! :)

Here’s the handsome boy! Don’t you love that smile?!

Mr. Higgins was in the water the entire time – he’s practically a fish!

And to top it all off, we saw the kind of sunset I pray for… it was an absolutely perfect evening.

Carina, thank you so much for introducing me to your handsome boy! He did spectacularly well, and I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)

Oscar the Black Lab from La Jolla, CA

Monday, September 28th, 2015

To be completely honest with you, I didn’t know I’d be photographing this session until 48 hours before it happened. And while I love squeezing in sessions on sunny days, especially with a happy & handsome black lab like Oscar… it wasn’t exactly fun & spontaneity that took us to Marine Street Beach the other night.

Joining a dog and his family for what could be that dog’s very last trip to the beach is, well… there are a lot of mixed emotions. It was absolutely joyful to see Oscar jog (well, totter might be a better word!) down the beach and through the waves, especially when I knew he’d had trouble standing and walking in the days beforehand. He had a big grin on his face the entire time – I can’t even begin to imagine how good the sand felt in his paws & fur. He even tried to dig a few holes! It was as if the myeloma wasn’t even there.

Oscar’s family doesn’t know how much time they have left together… it could be months, weeks, or days… so I was absolutely honored to join them for a sunset trip to the beach, where they knew Oscar would be happy. I hope you’ll join me in sending happy thoughts & healing prayers their way… Oscar certainly deserves a much longer life, because I can tell he has a LOT more love to give.

This is sweet, handsome Oscar – isn’t he a gorgeous black lab?!

cute black lab

His sisters love him so much – I really enjoyed watching them interact together. Oscar is so patient & happy to be around them!

black lab with family

No, you’re not seeing double – this is Oscar with his 2-year-old brother Bruce, also a black lab. (Who apparently had never gone swimming before last year, but this was one of the few photos of Bruce on dry land, haha!)

Sarah & Paul, I’m so glad you reached out to me. I’ll be thinking of you & Oscar over the next several days and weeks, I’m sure. Looking forward to going through the rest of our photos with you soon!

La Mesa Pet Photography with Bimmer, Laila & Leo

Tuesday, March 17th, 2015

I’m so happy to introduce you to this beautiful pack of dogs! I shared a La Mesa pet photography session with Bimmer, Laila & Leo recently, and I call them a “pack” on purpose because that’s exactly what they are: an inseparable group of best friends! Honestly, it was pretty darn cute when we started out working with just Leo, the youngest of the bunch, all by himself… and he simply wouldn’t have it! He kept racing back over to the house to see when his older siblings would be joining us! So while their close-knit bond made our “individual” photos a little bit tougher to come by, haha, we had an absolute blast playing in the backyard all together! These pups take fetch seriously! And it was adorable to see the routine patterns they’d worked out amongst themselves, each time the ball was thrown: Bimmer would only go for the ball if it came his way, whereas pups Laila & Leo ran at breakneck speed to get the ball, wherever it was, and they’d just end up in a wrestling match at the end of every toss anyway! :)

So we shared a lovely afternoon with perfectly soft light in their backyard, and amidst the chaos of balls, treats, toys, and three big dogs running in every direction, I think we ended up with some great images!

Here’s big old man Bimmer (pronounced “bee-mer”)! He’s a gorgeous golden retriever with a stunning red coat and beautiful, soulful eyes. His parents say that he’s enjoying a “second puppyhood” since they made the introduction of his younger brother, Leo, to the family – and I believe it! He has such a fun spirit!

la mesa pet photo

This pretty girl is Laila! She’s a cream-colored golden retriever, and I’d say she’s the calmest of the bunch, relatively speaking… but when she gets going, watch out! This girl is fast! What a beauty.

la mesa pet photography

And this handsome boy is Leo (short for Leonardo)! He’s still a puppy, and simply can’t get enough of playing with his older brother & sister. (And yes, that’s grass on his tongue! Haha!)

la mesa dog photographer

Dee & Pat, I’m so glad you saw my portraits hanging up in Hairy & Merry, because I had such a great time at our photo session & getting to know you both! I’m excited to show you the rest of our images soon! :)

Outdoors-Loving Dogs Emerson, Russell & Bells!

Saturday, January 24th, 2015

In any career, I think, there are projects that go smoothly and projects that, well, don’t go as smoothly. And it’s no different for me; honestly, most of my sessions are scheduled without any issues, go off without a hitch, and there aren’t any moments of unexpectedness, confusion or frustration. Unfortunately, though, this was NOT one of those sessions! My clients & I truly fought the odds for Emerson, Russell & Bells’ session to happen: first, two out of three dogs were feeling bad at the beginning of the week! Bells had stepped on a stick while out for a run with her mom, and it left a gash between her paw pads… and Russell came down with a sickness that required an intestinal antibiotic for inflammation! Both dogs were feeling miserable – certainly not photo shoot-ready – and so we had to play it by ear & see how they were feeling by the end of the week. Luckily, they felt better, and despite a random case of car sickness on their way to the studio, our session started smoothly… but then we pulled up to our second location, and found that the parks service had locked us out!! We had our hearts set on visiting Lake Sutherland, but it turns out you can’t get down to the lake unless it’s fishing season… which starts in March. Gah!!! But we turned a negative into a positive by finding a couple of amazing spots to work in, just off the road, which worked absolutely perfectly – they were totally unique and we definitely wouldn’t have the photos that we have now (with gorgeous vistas & long, flowing grasses) if we’d gone straight down to the water’s edge! So despite the – ahem – difficulties, we ended up having a fantastic session & I’m loving our photos of these outdoors-loving dogs! :)

This is Bells, the tough little cattle dog mix who hurt her paw just a few days before our session. She goes on runs with her mom all the time, and we knew we wanted a photo of her “wearing” her mom’s running shoes – how cute is this?! Haha!

dog running shoes

This gorgeous mutt is Russell, the usually-healthy dog who came down with a bit of sickness. He was completely back to being himself again in time for our session – and I’m so glad, because I just love his smile! He’s a labrador mix (with pit bull? Great Dane?) and a goofy, happy boy.

dog hike photo

And here’s Emerson, the handsome chocolate lab. He tested my skills on getting his ears perked up for his photos; usually that’s a tricky thing to do with greyhounds & whippets, but not labs! Emerson is old & wise, though, and he’d (apparently) seen pretty much all of my tricks before. Good thing I still had a couple up my sleeve, though – that ears-up profile is too good-looking to miss out on!

outdoors dog photo

Shaela & Chris, thank you for battling the odds with me! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)
