Del Mar Beach Photo Session: Jilli the Golden Retriever Mix!

Thursday, September 4th, 2014

I enjoyed a lovely Del Mar beach photo session with Jilli and her family recently! Jilli is a golden retriever/Australian shepherd mixed breed dog that lives in Santee, whom I met months ago at the Navy Woof Walk. We finally had the chance to get together for a custom photo session – and we picked a gorgeous night to visit the Del Mar beach! The sun was shining and the temperature was moderate, not too hot and not too cold… I couldn’t have asked for a better evening!

Jilli’s dad is in the Coast Guard, and he’s out of town on assignment rather often. So as a result, whenever he is in town, Jilli always wants to see her parents together – and she gets anxious anytime her dad leaves out of sight, even if it’s just for a few minutes! (We had a joyous reunion when he came back from getting a forgotten toy from the car!) I thought that was so cute; she really loves her family and wants to see her parents together & happy. She’s a total sweetheart!

We actually started our session at Powerhouse Park, a small grassy area next to the beach. I love this spot because it gives us a park-like setting & feel, but the beach is just a few yards away! Super convenient, if you ask me!

We played an intense game of fetch…

And of course, we made our way down to the coast – and as soon as her paws hit the sand Jilli promptly decided to rush into the ocean! So as a result we don’t have any “dry” pictures in this setting… but hey, how many dogs actually stay dry once they get to the beach? :)

Kerry & Darnell, I had an absolutely wonderful time with you three! I’m excited to keep working on Jilli’s photos – we have so many cute ones! :)

Del Mar Cat Photography: Kiva the Ragdoll

Sunday, May 18th, 2014

I absolutely love meeting pets & owners that are deeply connected to each another, and this Del Mar cat photography session was no exception! Kiva is a 17-year-old ragdoll cat who lives with her mom, Amie, in their gorgeous Del Mar home, and it was clear to see how close they are. (I would post a photo of the two of them together, but I know humans typically like to see & approve their photos before they go on the internet, haha!) Kiva happens to be, well, slightly past her prime physically – she is 17! – so we went about the session slowly and at her pace. We also gave her frequent breaks in her “happy place”, the garden! She was incredibly cooperative and let us play with her all afternoon long… all three of us had a great time! And plus, I even got to meet a few of Kiva’s feline siblings; she has several younger brothers and sisters but their mom wanted Kiva to be the center of attention for our session, since they’ve been together the longest. So without further ado, let me introduce you to this very special kitty!

Kiva’s backyard was a dream come true to photograph! So many flowers and so much greenery… I love the attention to detail that I always see in my Del Mar clients’ homes! I suppose it’s reason #824 why I love Del Mar photo sessions

And in standard feline fashion, she informed us (in a not-so-subtle way) when she was done with our shenanigans.

Amie, thank you for a fabulous afternoon! I can’t wait to see you again soon & show you the rest of our photos! :)

Del Mar Dog Photos: Chase the Bearded Collie!

Thursday, April 3rd, 2014

There’s a beautiful story that accompanies these Del Mar dog photos. Chase is a happy-go-lucky bearded collie who, at nine years old, keeps her mom company out in the San Diego desert, where they live. She doesn’t get to come visit the beach very often, but recently, she’s been staying with her human “sister” Haley in Carlsbad, and trips to the beach are becoming much more frequent! Even though she misses her mom (she even “sulked” on her sister’s patio her whole first day in Carlsbad!), she’s adjusting to a new pace of life here on the coast for the time being. Because what Chase doesn’t know is that, unfortunately, her mom was recently diagnosed with cancer. So Haley happily introduced Chase to her house in Carlsbad, to give their mom plenty of rest following a recent surgery. Now, I’m thrilled to report that that surgery went really well! That means Chase’s mom is on the road to recovery (yay!) and Chase will be back with her in a few weeks – double yay! But for the time being, Haley & Chase are spending some extra time together as sisters – and what better get-well gift could they give their mom than photos from a photo session? We enjoyed a lovely romp in the park in Del Mar, and the light was absolutely perfect for us. Take a look!

I’m told that bearded collies (“beardies”) are typically low-energy, lazy dogs. So… did someone forget to tell that to Chase?? This girl is a serious athlete – and nothing, nothing gets her going like her tennis ball!

I know this post is about Del Mar dog photos, but can you believe this sunset? Oh wait – it’s this beautiful every day in Del Mar. Sigh.

What beach photo session would be complete without a sopping-wet dog? Chase definitely loves the water – in fact, her favorite thing to do is plop herself down right in the surf!

Chase, thank you for being your hilarious, comedic self! Haley, thank you for a super-fun session – something tells me we’re going to have a LOT of photos in your gallery! :)

Family Pet Photography in San Diego, CA: Seamus the Norwich Terrier

Saturday, December 21st, 2013

This family pet photography session holds a special place in my heart. Seamus’ mom Lisa contacted me months ago, and we booked a date – but then she got bad news about her husband’s deployment. He would be held up, not making it home in time for our session date – or even for Thanksgiving. As a former military wife (well, I suppose I’m kind of still current, since Mr. Shamrell is in the Naval Reserves here in San Diego now) my heart went out to her. Big time. So I told her to call me as soon as her hubby was back in town, and I’d rearrange my schedule however would be necessary so that we could make their family/pet photo session happen. Fast-forward to last week, and he finally got back! Just in time! This was my very last photo session before my personal Christmas break, haha! I was thrilled to be able to fit them in, and extra-thrilled that Lisa’s hubby made it back for our session. Because while we kept the focus on Seamus – the adorable Norwich terrier with an attitude – this was a family photo session too, and it just wouldn’t have been complete without him.

So let me introduce you! This is Seamus!

He wasn’t a big fan of the studio, though, so before long we headed for the great outdoors! Then he really got to stretch his legs!

I love that scruffy little face… and I can’t complete this blog post without introducing you to Seamus’ sister, Saoirse (pronounced SEER-sha)! She’s 6 months old and was (mostly) happy to join us for a few photos. How cute is this family?!

Lisa & Jesse, I had an absolute blast during our session – and I know Seamus had a great time too! Haha! Thank you so much for introducing me to San Dieguito County Park – my new favorite location – and I can’t wait to get together again in January!  :)

In-Home Del Mar Pet Photography Session with Buffy the Yellow Labrador

Thursday, December 19th, 2013

This pet photography session is the result of a bit of networking, as it turns out! I don’t exactly expect to meet future clients when I attend Chamber of Commerce meetings, but recently I met someone who wanted to give the gift of a pet photography session to his parents & their dog for Christmas this year! So I suppose you could say this session came about because of Buffy’s “brother”!

I met Buffy & her parents at their gorgeous home in Del Mar, CA. Let me tell you, their house was a photographer’s dream: they have a beautiful yard of well-maintained grass, plenty of surrounding foliage (for pretty backgrounds), and plenty of room to run around! And while Buffy doesn’t do much running these days – she’s 11 years old – she worked up enough energy to play fetch a few times for us! Buffy is a total sweetheart, and was really great to work with – but once we mentioned the word “car”, she didn’t leave the car’s trunk for the rest of the session! Haha!

This photo is literally the first frame out of my camera. Buffy decided that no pet photography session should happen without a few belly-rubs… and why not start with one?

Here’s Buffy with her “sisters”… aren’t they all gorgeous?! I love this family!

Buffy, it was wonderful to meet you! I can’t wait to show your parents all the beautiful family photos from our session… see you in the new year! :)
