An Update for Cosmo Kramer & Simone, the Frenchies!

Thursday, May 17th, 2018

So every once in a while, the schedule gods decide NOT to be on my side. (Or maybe I anger them somehow? Who knows!) When that happens, it usually ends up delaying appointments that I’m looking forward to… and this time it meant that Cosmo Kramer & Simone’s family has had to wait far too long (in my opinion) to see their images! But the good news is that they’re finally coming in to the studio in just a few days, and then they’ll get to see all of our adorable portraits – yay! But until then, I decided that their saint-like patience should be rewarded with a second sneak peek! (Did you see their first sneak peek?) Because these Frenchies are way too cute to keep to myself. :)

So without further ado… here’s a fresh look at these Frenchies from San Diego!

French Bulldogs Cosmo Kramer & Simone

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018

I think it can be easy to assign stereotypes to dog breeds sometimes. Not in a bad way – but you might assume certain things about the personality of a dog, just because of its breed. For example, you might think that golden retrievers are always happy. Or that miniature poodles enjoy being carried around town. Or that dobermans make great guard dogs… or that cattle dogs are happiest when they have something to herd.

Part of this is totally logical – these assumptions are (more or less) what those breeds were literally bred for! So you’d be right, most of the time.

But when I ask you for a stereotype about French bulldogs… what comes to mind? For me, that’s a little trickier. If I really think about it, over my career, every French bulldog I’ve ever met has a strong personality and isn’t afraid to ask for what they want. And they’re goofballs!

So when Cosmo Kramer & Simone’s mom got in touch with me, I assumed I’d be in for an entertaining session, to say the least… two French bulldogs?? That could only mean twice the attitude and twice the goofiness – and therefore, a rollicking good time. And guess what: my stereotype was right!!! We had a BLAST during our photo session, and both dogs were just as assertive and confident as I expected (and hoped) they would be.

But there was one thing I didn’t see coming: amidst all that Frenchie attitude, Cosmo & Simone radiated a constant, unwavering sense of admiration and love for their family. It was so clear to me, throughout our session, that these “big dogs at heart” feel so big & confident because their parents and human “brother” are by their side. They were often checking on their people (especially their mom) during our time together, almost seeming to get their positive energy from their family’s presence. I have a feeling that these close family ties of love & belonging are what let Cosmo & Simone act so “big”.

Sound cheesy? Maybe. But after years of working with families, I know genuine connection when I see it. So let’s just say Cosmo & Simone are two very lucky dogs.

We started our photo session in the studio – Simone is on the left and Cosmo’s on the right!

This is Cosmo Kramer, named for his quirky mannerisms that evoke the Seinfeld character. And COME ON is there possibly a more handsome dog out there?! That blocky head, those inky eyes… he’s gorgeous. (No surprise that he’s a former show dog!) My favorite fact about Cosmo is that he watches TV and only gets upset when he sees 2 things: penguins and Nazis!

And this is the sweet Simone, infamous in her family for having no chill. Whatsoever. Clearly. (But believe it or not, she wasn’t the rascal who ran straight into my camera!!)

Martha, Chris and Vincent, thank you so much for a fun afternoon! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our images very soon! :)

Tank & Petunia, English Bulldogs from Oceanside!

Friday, March 30th, 2018

Some people have a hard time deciding their favorite breed of dog… maybe they’ve adopted several different breeds over the years, or they have no idea what kind of dog they’ll get next. I can understand that dilemma. But Tank & Petunia’s family do not have that problem!! They’re loyal to one of the most faithful, loving breeds of dogs ever created: English bulldogs!

Tank & Petunia are the current 4-legged residents of the family, and their predecessors (also English bulldogs, of course) still have their portraits hanging on the wall. So it was time to capture these dogs’ spirit, and all the love & life they add to their household! We spent our photo session in their gorgeous backyard – and I was totally spoiled, since it’s a gorgeous yard! We let each dog have their time in the spotlight before bringing everyone together for a few family photos, and the whole session was a lot of fun. And although Tank & Petunia aren’t exactly best friends, I absolutely loved documenting each of their distinct personalities with a little 1-on-1 time. Tank is a big, goofy guy who unfortunately doesn’t see or hear very well these days, which gave me a slight challenge to work with – but he’s so happy & good-natured that I couldn’t help but fall in love with him! And Petunia makes up for his general lack of attitude with a double dose of her own; she’s a funny & sassy little lady, and a total daddy’s girl. (Let’s just say I was glad she “allowed” me to photograph her, haha!)

This is Tank – such a handsome boy!!

It’s not safe for Tank to run around too much anymore, since his vision has declined so much, and he can’t see if there’s a piece of furniture in his way – but when there’s a clear path toward treats, he doesn’t hesitate!

Petunia has the best head tilt. I mean, just look at that face!

Honestly? The backyard is her domain; we’re just visitors. (Watch out, lizards in the bushes!)

Parker the Super Dog!

Wednesday, March 21st, 2018

Every dog has a backstory…

Much like his predecessors Krypto, Lockjaw & Cosmo, Parker is a super dog! He even has special powers to prove it! His powers include: incredible obedience skills, unrelenting guard-dog vigilance, and the ability to sniff everything. (Plus, he’s pretty good at convincing you to give him belly rubs.) I first met Parker in my studio, where – oh! another power! – he shredded a record number of toys before my very eyes, haha! As he de-stuffed to his heart’s content, we planned a photo session to capture the personality and good looks of this friendly neighborhood dog.

(I know, you’re probably wondering: why all the superhero references? Well, let’s just say Parker’s parents have been to a few Comic Cons, so I figured this sneak peek could use an infusion of “super” energy that even Tony Stark could be proud of!)

But to be honest with you, Parker’s not the only one in his family that’s super. His parents have had out-of-this-world patience with him, since they rescued him a couple of years ago and discovered that he had some pretty significant issues. But they’ve been working together on developing his self-confidence, and over time Parker has turned into a wonderful, happy boy. So although he still has a handful of kryptonite-like weaknesses, he’s light years further along than where he started. And in my opinion, that’s evidence of a love that’s far beyond ordinary. It was an honor to photograph this beautiful family!

Look at that face… Parker is so adorable! And believe it or not, he may look like a labrador, but according to his DNA he’s practically everything except lab!

Now that’s a handsome boy. I’m pretty sure that’s his “proud” look – I’m just not sure whether it’s for fetching the ball, saving the world, or getting a belly rub…

Did I forget to mention Parker’s other power?! Levitation, of course!

We also visited the beach for part of our photo session… Parker thought that was a pretty good idea too!

Janet & John, thank you so much for introducing me to your handsome boy – and for being willing to jump in the chilly water at the beach with me!! You’re both such great sports, and I can’t wait to get together with you again soon! :)

Justin Bieber, the Mischievous & Handicapped Dog

Tuesday, March 13th, 2018

I knew I was in for an interesting photo session when I got the very first email from Justin’s dad, in which he described Justin as “kind of a jerk sometimes”! It was shortly followed by Justin’s mom, describing him as “A little piss-ant! But excited to pose for you!” As you can probably imagine, I normally hear my clients describe their dogs as “sweet”, “loving”, “adorable”, etc – but Justin’s parents weren’t pulling any punches! Haha! I absolutely loved their raw honesty – because what dog doesn’t act naughty from time to time? – and I knew we’d have an entertaining time together as we photographed Justin Bieber in all his naughtiness. (Good thing he’s actually pretty adorable after all!)

I know you’re wondering, so I’ll answer the question: his parents aren’t actually fans of the pop star. As it turns out, on the same night that Justin’s mom chaperoned her younger cousin to a Justin Bieber concert here in San Diego, her roommate’s dog (to everyone’s surprise) had puppies. Due to the timing, they named one of those puppies Justin Bieber, and that was the puppy his mom ended up adopting! And he was a completely normal (albeit mischievous) dog until about age 2, at which point he became paralyzed. There was no trauma – it was all natural causes – but unfortunately he lost the use of his back two legs. And ever since then, his parents have accommodated Justin with ramps to their front and back yards, as well as a wheelchair that makes it easier for him to get around. But he’s actually quite capable of getting around on his own; his back half just kind of drags behind his fully-functional front half. So that’s exactly how we let him run loose during our session… and to be honest, he’s actually pretty quick for a dog that only runs with two legs! Something tells me Justin doesn’t actually know (or believe) he’s a handicapped dog; his bright spirit and relentless curiosity tell a different story. So if you meet him, or (more likely) if he barks at you when you walk by his house, just smile and tell him he’s a good boy. Because I don’t know any other little rascal that ignores all the odds stacked against him and still finds a way to light up his parents’ lives the way Justin Bieber does.

Here’s the face of the little “piss-ant” himself, JB. Look at those big, innocent eyes – you can hardly believe he’d do anything naughty! (Trust me, he can. I’ve heard stories.)

Sometimes JB rocks a hoodie. Because he occasionally gets cold… and because it perfectly matches the pretty red flowers in his yard, too!

We went to Balboa Park and played a bit of fetch – and this boy can RUN! It was the most adorable thing to see him propel himself forward with his front two legs, ears and tongue flapping in the wind, while his back two legs dangle behind. I’m telling you, this dog does not know that he’s handicapped.

Christine & David, thank you for introducing me to your incredible & hilarious little boy! I had a great time with all of you, and I can’t wait to get together again soon! :)
