Premium Albums: The Silk Cover

March 28th, 2012

Welcome to Part Two of my Premium Album introduction! And really, (I was thinking about this just now) what better way is there to introduce these to you than blogging about them? This way, I can show you ridiculous amounts of photos, so that you can get a grasp on what these albums are like inside and out! Pretty perfect, right? (I know, I know: there’s technically a better way of showing off the albums. Videos. I’m working on that. For now, you get wonderfully long blog posts!)

This album is a fabulous one: the cover is made of silk! That’s right – it’s not a scarf – it’s an album. And it’s made of silk. Excited to see it yet? Without further ado…

The box this album comes in isn’t custom like the photo-cover album, but what it lacks in custom-ness it more than makes up for in luxury. It’s leather, it’s padded, and it’s just fun to hold. Trust me on that one… you’ll love this box.

Here’s the book by itself.

I believe this is actually the thinnest premium album that I offer…

Can you see the silk texturing?

Again, pages that lay completely flat…

… no matter what page you’re on.

Augh. It’s a thing of beauty. To me, at least.

A peek at an inside spread…

Check it out! There’s NO gutter! This album provider takes an actual photographic print (12×24 inches, in this case) and spreads it across the page sides, so the look is completely seamless!

The shiny part you see at the middle-bottom is just light reflecting, from my flashes to take this photo. It’s not a gutter or break in the book.

The pages are thick and sturdy, just like the photo-cover premium album.

This album company provides an extremely customizable product. Don’t like the silk cover? Okay, how about leather? Don’t like leather? Then how about patterned & embossed silk? Don’t like the cover photo inset? We can leave it blank… or would you prefer two photos? There’s pretty much no limit to all the combinations I can make for my clients; and let me tell you, that made choosing a style/design for this sample album incredibly difficult! But I love how this album turned out, and in my opinion, nothing calls for the luxury of silk more than two pampered Westie girls!

If you missed seeing the photo-cover premium album, you can see it here. Stay tuned for Premium Album #3…

Premium Albums: The Photo Cover

March 27th, 2012

Okay, I’m going to run the risk of sounding really repetitive over the next few posts. Let’s just get out there what I’m feeling:

I am so excited about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay. It may be hard to believe, but that obnoxious amount of exclamation points was actually necessary. Because this is something that I’ve been planning, researching, preparing and waiting for, for about six months. I’m introducing a new product line, and as the title of this blog post says, it’s a line of premium albums.

I already offer coffee table books – and they’re great! But many clients have asked me for more options. I wanted to continue offering all the features my clients love in their coffee table books – lay flat pages, clean design, great presentation – and still add so much more. This is a HUGE step up, in both quality and price, and it’s absolutely perfect for those clients who really want to feature their dogs’ portraits in an incredibly special way.

This post features a premium album with full-bleed photos on the front and back covers. I actually have three providers for the different types of premium albums I offer, not just one, because I felt that once my clients decide to make such a fabulous purchase, they ought to be able to choose between the best album providers in the photography industry. As far as showcasing a photo on the front cover, this lab absolutely excelled in every possible category, so I’m thrilled to offer their albums to my clients! (Remember: this is only the first of three album types. The others will be featured in their very own blog posts, because I don’t play favorites, even with inanimate objects. I’ll post links to those posts here as soon as they exist.)

Okay – let’s get started!!

The photo-cover premium album comes with its very own custom photo box! Here’s its front and spine:

Here’s the back side.

I chose to put only the dog’s name on the spine of the box, for simplicity’s sake. Kai is a sweetheart of a pit bull, and she and her mom live in New Orleans – they came all the way to Pensacola for their session, and we had a fantastic time together!

The box opens from the side…

It has a beautiful sheer cloth insert to protect the book…

And here’s the book itself, sitting on top of its box…

And finally, just the book.

Ready to see inside? Me too!

Here’s an example of a spread.

The gutter normally found in big books is almost entirely nonexistent. This full-spread design was specifically made up of darker colors, so that you can see the most dramatic effect a white seam could have. I think it’s pretty remarkably small! I honestly don’t think it detracts from the photo much at all, so that’s one feature I love about these books.

My past clients love how their coffee table books can lay completely flat, without anyone having to hold down any pages (like you would with a magazine). This book lays flat like a pro.

A sample copy of a premium photo-cover album featuring custom pet photography by Allison Shamrell.

Let’s take a closer look at those pages…

The pages are thick; they have a substrate inside them that provides support and stability. Trust me, you’ll never rip one of these pages. And in the photo to the left of the collage below, you get to see a bit of how the cover is slightly padded with more substrate. To be honest, I feel bad for you: this book feels incredible and I wish you could just run your hands over it. The cover has an incredible matte finish and the slight plush cushion underneath the printed material is just… well, you have to feel it to believe it.

Here’s another look at the cover.

The back cover:

I even found a small place for my logo!

Well, there you have it, the first of three incredible premium albums. I’ll be bringing these only sparingly to events; they’ll mostly be reserved for the eyes of clients  in their ordering sessions. So to see them all… just book a session! :) haha!

I hope you enjoyed looking through this book! I can’t wait to show you the accompanying two albums; stay tuned!

The Best Pet Photography Products

July 25th, 2017

how much should a pet photo session cost

I absolutely love creating gorgeous images of pets & families around San Diego… but you know what’s just as much fun? Doing something with those photos! It’s a tragedy, in my opinion, to let high-quality imagery languish on a forgotten hard drive… and products are often an afterthought of people seeking photography. Which is totally understandable, to be honest with you; it’s hard to envision what you’ll do with photos that haven’t even been taken yet. But I’d love to provide you with some inspiration today! I’ve been photographing 4-leggers and their families for over 6 years, and over that time I’ve seen firsthand which types of products have a lasting impact & can truly stand the test of time. I’ve also curated my product line throughout those years to include the best & most popular products that my clients & I have consistently loved. These are some of the best pet photography products that I’ve ever seen – so I’m excited to share them with you!

1. Wall Art

Wall art is a classic way to enjoy your portraits every day. This is hands-down my favorite type of product; decorating the space you spend your life in with images you truly love.

I offer fine art prints, canvas gallery wraps, and metal prints – and as you can see, they all have a very different look! I typically recommend choosing the medium that best suits your design style; if modern & contemporary is your thing, go with metal! It’s stunningly gorgeous and makes an impact wherever you display it. But if rustic & organic is your look, then canvas gallery wraps are a perfect fit – they have subtle texture and a vibe that evokes the natural side of life. On the other hand, traditional and classic style lends itself well to fine art prints. Whichever medium you choose, you want it to fit in with the rest of your home’s decor, and a variety of wall art products allows me to work with any client’s design style.

2. Albums

best products for pet photography

Okay, I know I said that I love wall art the most – but my albums take a very close second place! Books & albums are the best way to display ALL the photos from your pet photography session. You probably won’t choose to hang up 40 photos on your walls (do you have that many walls?), but you can enjoy them all in the pages of a premium album! Plus, albums are a great place for the detail images, the silly moments, and the funny outtakes that simply aren’t suited to be hung on the wall.

I also like to include quotes from various authors & historical figures in my albums; there are SO many great sayings out there about pets, love and family, and they help tell the story of your session and what your pets mean to you as you’re flipping through the pages.

3.Digital Images

best pet photography products

It’s 2017, so this post simply wouldn’t be complete without a mention of my digital products. But can I share something with you that not many people know about digital photos? The resolution is key. Purchasing a photo with high-resolution is like pulling out all the stops; you can print it at many sizes and it won’t look grainy or pixellated. It can, however, be overkill for digital use; super-high resolution is why photos on websites take a long time to load. Whereas photos with low-resolution are the perfect quick digital option! They load quickly, take up less hard drive space, and are generally more nimble & versatile online. But their weakness is printing; a physical copy of a low-resolution photo will often appear pixellated. (It’s not the printer’s fault – it’s the photo!) So make your choice carefully, based on what you want to do with the images from your photo session! My clients often choose the high-resolution option, so they can make Christmas cards and fun stuff in the future (like mugs & mouse pads!) and in that case I give them a complimentary low-resolution version of each image too, just in case they want to share them online without a headache. But many of my clients also choose to have a custom mobile app with their images, which is a great low-resolution option! It’s so much fun to have a quick-access app on your phone, so you can always bring up the photos from your session!

4. Desktop Prints

pet photo desktop print

Okay, I admit, this is not a high-quality photo – it’s an iPhone snapshot of my desk! But what better example can I give you of why I love desktop prints? This is a photo of my girl Bailey, and I absolutely love keeping it so close by. Because as much as I love to pull out all the stops with archival wall art & custom-designed albums, I also know that there’s a beautiful simplicity to an old-fashioned framed print on your desktop. (Or your shelf, or entry table, or dresser…) So why argue with tradition? My fine art prints are UV-coated, too, so even if your desk sits in the sunlight, your prints will never fade. That happy face will always be as vibrant as the day of our photo session.

Conclusion

So there you have it! These are some of my favorite options, and I think they’re the best pet photography products on the market today. If you’re working with a photographer, keep this in mind: I hope you’ll choose products that fit your lifestyle & how you prefer to experience photography. There are tons of options out there (I offer a few more products, too!) and I think you’ll love picking out your favorites!

In the meantime, let me leave you with a couple of my creative wall art collages (in metal and canvas) for inspiration…

Studio Photos of Dogs Chloe & Emma, Chocolate Labs in San Diego

October 25th, 2014

I have a couple of familiar faces for you to see today! Regular blog readers might remember Emma & Chloe, from their outdoor photo session in Rancho Santa Fe back in April. Well, the product collection that their parents picked out included a future photo session, and since we spent their first session around their house & neighborhood, they decided it’d be a nice change of pace to visit the studio this time! So we had a great second photo session together!

One of the goals for this session was to get a bigger variety of images for Emma & Chloe’s premium album, which I’ll be designing for their parents very soon. So we tested their obedience here in the studio, with plenty of sit-stays and down-stays. The girls did great – even Emma the puppy, who at only 14 months old, is already bigger than her 5-year-old sister Chloe! (She was much smaller back in April!) Emma definitely had plenty of energy, and at times wanted to run around like we were outside again, but she was so happy to sit for treats that we were able to get a few relatively-calm-looking photos too, haha! :)

Here’s Emma, the “puppy”. This photo is a great example of why I love studio photos of dogs: they’re just simple. All the focus is on how beautiful the dog is, and there aren’t any extra environmental elements that might be distracting or cluttering up the image. It’s simply your dog, in all her beauty.

Ray & Monica, I’m excited to see you both back in the studio again! Thanks for all the extra playtime with your pups! :)

Heading to a Photography Conference! (WPPI 2013)

March 6th, 2013

Hey everyone! I thought I’d let you in on what I’ve been up to this week, besides photographing my monthly quota of dachshunds: on Saturday I’m headed to a photography conference! In fact, it’s the biggest international photo conference on the planet! It’s called WPPI, which stands for Wedding & Portrait Photographers International. It’s held around this time every year in Las Vegas (oh yeah!) and this will be my first-ever time going. I’m SO excited! I’ve been to smaller photography conferences before – there’s one called Imaging USA that I’ve attended a couple of times, and WPPI-U which is a much smaller version of WPPI – but this will be my first time at the real thing!

There are two facets (a.k.a. two big reasons) why I’m going. #1 are the classes, in which photographers (who have been around a lot longer than me!) instruct on various topics. Take a look at a tiny picture I found via Google:

wppi_class

Classes are typically several hundred people packed into a ballroom-sized room, so thank goodness for that massive projector. People bring stuff to take notes (I’ll have my iPad in a handy new keyboard case!), and the instructors always include time to answer questions.

Some of the classes I’m attending:

– “Home Base: Running a Successful Home-Based Studio”, because once we move (to who-knows-where) I might be incorporating a meeting area & studio space into our home… eeeee! :)

– “Shoot, Stylize and Social Network with Photoshop CS6”, because even though sometimes I spend all day in Photoshop, I’m sure I haven’t explored half of its capabilities – it’s SO powerful. I’d love to see what other people are doing with the same program. And social networking is definitely not the first thing that comes to my mind with Photoshop… so I figure it’s bound to be an interesting class!

– “Dear Me, Stop Making the Same Mistakes, Love, Future Me”, because how adorable is the name of this class? And everyone’s guilty of repeating their mistakes, so the less I can do that, the better.

– “Wireless Flash & Strobes Tips & Tricks – Both Manual & TTL”, because I have a firm grasp of my speedlights but this seems like a slightly advanced class. The description also said they cover techniques for “fast-paced” situations, and what’s more fast-paced than a dog?

– “Content Marketing & Social Media”, because I’m always looking to improve my marketing. After all, you can’t hire me if you don’t know about me!

Reason #2: the expo! This is the industry’s biggest trade show – actually, “big” doesn’t do it justice. Here are a few photos so you get an idea, again courtesy of Google:

WPPI 2011 | Las Vegas MGM Grand Convention Center

wppi2011-2354

01_wppi10

wppi_samples

As you can see… it’s kind of a madhouse the size of five football fields! The above photos show just one of the TWO massive ballrooms it takes up! There are hundreds of companies with booths ranging from 10’x10′ to 50’x50′, all trying to get the attention of the thousands of photographers that will be there. Companies include:

– professional labs, so I can make sure I’m using the best-quality printers in the industry

– album printers & binders, which is exactly how I found all the makers of my premium albums

– software makers, that make all types of programs that help all my behind-the-scenes processes operate more smoothly

– equipment suppliers, so I could buy new cameras/lenses/filters if I wanted (like Adorama and B&H)

– financial services, so I can make sure I’m accepting credit cards in the safest & easiest ways

and WAY more! For example, there’s a company I’m looking forward to seeing that exclusively prints photos onto wood. I’ve never seen that before, and it sounds pretty cool! All in all, the expo is a sensory overload of touching & feeling new products, and it lets me make sure that I’m offering and using the BEST of what’s out there. I’ll pretty much be a kid in a candy store! :)  Plus, as you can see in the second-to-last photo above, little mini-classes are given at the bigger booths. So the learning literally never stops. Hey, if I’m flying across the country to attend something like this, I want to make sure that it’s time & money well spent, because it’s a lot of each. I think WPPI will be GREAT!

Oh yeah… and… it’s in Vegas! I don’t know how much time/energy I’ll have for gambling, but you’ll hear if my winnings A) exist, and B) cover a nice dinner out once I’m back in Pensacola! Unfortunately, Ken isn’t coming with me (he said something about applying for jobs being kind of important right now…) so I’ll have to digest all the information I’m about to get on my own. Gah – hopefully it all fits in my head, or at least on my iPad!

Above all, I know this conference will help propel my business forward. The smaller conferences I’ve attended in the past have inspired:

– in-person ordering sessions, instead of online posted galleries, which took my clients’ ordering process from overwhelming & tedious to fun, relaxed & quick

premium albums, which have been one of my most popular products by FAR over the past year

– my mutually beneficial relationships with businesses like 3 Dogs & A Chick, The Spotted Dog, Davis Animal Hospital, Northside Vet Clinic, Parkway Animal Hospital, and more

– and last but not least, the improved quality of my photos and clearer definition of my style, thanks to classes with pet and non-pet photographers.

Literally every part of my business improves when I attend a conference, and I know next week will be the best one yet! I’ll be gone from Saturday – Friday, so you’ll see a bit of “radio silence” in the meantime here on the blog. Hopefully I’ll be able to update the Facebook page with what I’m learning and seeing… leave a note here in the comments if you have suggestions on what to see/do in Vegas, products you’d like me to check out/consider offering, or anything else! Wish me luck – I’ll see ya on the other side! :)
