A Pet Photographer’s Birthday Present to Herself – and Someone Else!

Monday, September 2nd, 2013

It’s tradition: each year, I give myself a birthday present that’s also a gift for someone else! :)  And my birthday is September 3rd! Tomorrow! (Yay!) So it’s definitely time to announce the present…

Confused? Here’s what happens: I choose a dog breed that I’d LOVE to work with – one that I’ve never photographed before – and after a “casting call” of sorts, I give a complimentary session to the dog’s owner! It’s a pretty good deal for everyone involved, I think! haha! So here it is, this year’s birthday breed:

The Afghan Hound!

That long flowing hair, those graceful limbs, the deep expressive eyes… everything about the Afghan Hound says “beauty”. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting one, briefly, but I’d LOVE to actually photograph one! So if you know someone with an Afghan, first of all remind them how lucky they are. Then send them to this blog post! Here’s what they have to do to have a chance at winning a complimentary one-hour photo session:

~  Visit my main website, allisonshamrell.com, and make sure they like my style – which is natural, playful, and soulful. If they’d prefer formal, posed portraits in front of a fake fireplace background, I’m probably not the photographer for them. They should also check out the Pricing page – the Beagle Package is what’s at stake.

~  Email me at allison@allisonshamrell.com with a photo of their dog (it can be just a snapshot), and include just a few sentences about why they’d like to win the session, and what they’d do with the photos.

~  And that’s it! Within a week or so, I’ll choose a winner! It’s the best way to celebrate a pet photographer’s birthday, I think! haha :)

Last year’s birthday breed was the Bernese Mountain Dog, and Juno the 1-year-old Bernese was the lucky pup chosen to win! She brought her sisters (a chocolate lab and a golden retriever) along, of course, and we had a ridiculously fun session together. I can’t wait to meet this year’s winner – so, to all you Afghan Hound owners, good luck! :)

Disclaimers:

~  Contacting me does not guarantee a free session. Only one winner will be picked, and they must own an Afghan Hound. Email submissions from friends/family of the Afghan’s owner will not be considered.

~  Other dogs may participate in the session, as long as they live in the same household as the Afghan.

~  The Beagle Package includes one hour of time in any location in/around central San Diego. Additional fees will apply when including more than two dogs or requesting travel beyond 30 minutes’ driving time from the studio at 3251 Adams Ave in Normal Heights, San Diego.

My Dog Bailey’s First Surfing Lesson in Del Mar, CA

Thursday, August 22nd, 2013

If you’re a fan of the Facebook page, you already know the fun news: Bailey (my dog) had her first surfing lesson on Saturday! We met up with the So Cal Surf Dogs for their regular weekly lessons, and boy – I can’t possibly tell you how much fun it was!! We had an absolutely stellar time – and to our absolute shock & exhilaration, Bailey actually surfed!!

I kind of still can’t believe that photo exists… My dog can SURF! It was an absolutely unforgettable experience, and we can’t wait to go back for more!

The whole day was lots of fun from the beginning: first, the dogs got accustomed to their boards on the beach. The So Cal Surf Dogs instructors were incredibly patient with the dogs, and they made sure not to rush or force anyone into anything uncomfortable. I really can’t say enough for their patience & concern for the dogs’ happiness & safety. They even had a professional dog trainer there, just to watch out for signs of anxiety in the dogs.

No anxiety here! Bailey was ready to go!

And after a bit of instruction & reassurance, they sent us out into the water! There’s the handsome Mr. Shamrell with Bailey – he was so great at “launching” her!

fun dog surfing photos

And she surfed!!!

dog on surfboard

You’ll never guess what happened next. Right after she rode her very first wave – all the way to the beach! – I got stung by a stingray.

Yes, you read that right. Or at least the lifeguard thought I “brushed” into one, since I stepped on something poky and it immediately started hurting. So I was rushed to shore, but by the time I reached the lifeguard station, the pain had mostly gone away. I guess I confused the poor lifeguard on duty; he wasn’t sure if it was a bee or a piece of glass or a slight stingray sting that got me… but luckily, whatever it was didn’t stop me from getting back out there! I only missed a few of Bailey’s runs in the time it took for him to inspect my toes. I was too nervous to step out there barefoot, though, so I wore my sandals back out. Which didn’t make walking around very easy, but hey, I felt safer! :)

So while I was on shore, Mr. Shamrell & Bailey kept practicing, and eventually he was able to launch her without the help of our awesome instructor, Gigi. She’s a So Cal Surf Dogs volunteer, and was with us the whole time – and thank goodness, because we would have been lost without her! She was awesome at seeing what we were doing wrong and correcting us, and making sure Bailey was always in the right place & safe. There’s a lot to think about out there: your position relative to the board, your dog’s position, your hand positions, what the water is doing, when the next wave is coming, if there are any people/dogs/surfboards in front of or behind you… it’s not a simple thing!

dog surfing detailed

Here’s what we eventually learned: Bailey needs someone launching her, and someone else about 20 yards closer to the beach saying “staaaaayyyyy” with their hands up! If there’s no one to tell her to stay put, she would often make a break for it:

By the end of the lesson, the president of So Cal Surf Dogs was helping Bailey & Mr. Shamrell with a bit of technique. Looks like Bailey was one of the “quick learners” in the class! (ohmygoshiamsoproudmydogisagenius!)

As I shot these photos with my camera in one hand, my other hand was out and I was yelling “stay!” Haha!

fun dog surfing photos

I know she looks a bit uncertain in these photos, but I hope no one’s actually worried about her – Bailey was having a great time! I have to think that no one immediately starts smiling and waving the first time they learn how to stand up on a surfboard. Bailey was concentrating on staying up & staying put; she came running back to us after each run, and I figure that if she really didn’t like it, she’d make a beeline for the beach and stay there. She never did that, and was consistently wagging her tail between runs, so we felt good about hoisting her back up on the board each time. (Some dogs were much less sure about staying put on the boards, so they had leashes to connect their dogs to the boards. Got to say, I was proud of Bailey for not needing one of those!)

Get this: after she passed both of us, she’d just turn around and stare at us! As if to say, “Mom? Dad? Where am I going?” Too cute! We couldn’t stop laughing!!

Like I said – there were a few wipeouts. Not too many!

We were all cheering for her! Goooooo Bailey!!

It was a beautiful, perfect day. So many people were there – Bailey’s “class” had about 8 other dogs, and there were 2 more classes that day!

Somehow, we always come back to this. Even with a life vest!

If you’re interested in surfing with your dog in Del Mar (obviously I recommend it!), you can get more info & fill out the sign-up form here.

I’m already looking forward to our next lesson, as well as the upcoming dog surfing competition! Benefitting the Helen Woodward Animal Center, the Surf Dog Surf-A-Thon is September 8 at the Del Mar dog beach! I’ll definitely be there – Bailey needs a bit more training, I think, before making an appearance at an event like that – but I can’t wait to photograph all the action!

Seriously. I can’t think of a better way to spend your Saturday. We’ll be back out there soon! :)

Hillcrest, San Diego Pride Party with Dogs at Fido & Co. Canine Country Club

Thursday, July 18th, 2013

The Pride of Hillcrest is something I’d never been to before, but I learned quickly: it’s one big party! This yearly festival & parade is held in the Hillcrest neighborhood of San Diego, and I absolutely loved the happy, joyous atmosphere of the whole weekend!

Fido & Co., Hilcrest’s “canine country club”, invited me to photograph the event, and I’m so glad they did! It was so much fun to hang out with their members and enjoy the festivities! On Friday night, the band D’Nile took the stage in front of Fido & Co. and played long into the night – and you should have seen all the people that came up and started dancing! Saturday morning was the parade, and my gosh, people flocked to Fido & Co. to watch it all. (I suppose it could have had something to do with the bottomless mimosas they were serving…)

Take a look!

They decked out the whole building for the event!

The event was a perfect opportunity to collect proceeds for charity, and the recipient was Ferdinand’s Familia, San Diego’s only all-species rescue! I was talking to one of the volunteers, and they said they got a call a couple of weeks ago for a stray llama in Chula Vista. Um… what??? Ferdinand’s Familia has stables & facilities in Imperial City and they rescue everything from cats & dogs to goats & horses! What a great choice for a charity to support.

I decided to bring out my fisheye lens for a few photos, too…

Saturday morning! This picture is misleading, because I took it before FIdo & Co. got PACKED! There were easily 3-4 times as many people there by the time the parade started.

Dogs attended the festivities… obviously! :) That’s Gabi the pug & Ruby the yorkie.

Gabi donned a pink tutu for Saturday… so. perfect. Who doesn’t love pugs & tutus? You can see how everyone was loving her in the photo on the left!

These boys got plenty of attention too! I don’t know their names, but aren’t they handsome?

Haha! Everyone laughed when this dog used his brother as a head-rest! And this is Patrick the Boston terrier, who loved the camera…

And then the parade began!

Sadly, I couldn’t stay for the parade – some extended family came into town –  but if it was anything like the pre=parade party, I’m sure it was a BALL!

Thank you, Fido & Co., for inviting me to the event! I had a great time and I’m already excited for next year. :)

San Diego Pet Photographer Featured Internationally

Thursday, July 11th, 2013

Hello, lovely blog-readers! Some pretty exciting things have happened lately with a few of my photos, and if you’re not already a fan of the Facebook page, you might have missed hearing about it – and that’s no fun! So here’s the big news: my photos have been featured internationally!

Itty Bitty & Fluffy is a British-based blog about pet style & photography. They showcase the latest & greatest products in the pet industry, whether they’re from upscale boutiques or handmade by artisans. They’re also a storehouse of fantastic pet photography by artists around the globe. So when they notified me that they’d be featuring my session with Socrates the labradoodle, I was thrilled! Not only that – they took a dip into my blog archives and specifically asked to feature Gus’s session from last year as well! So those photos will be featured soon too! Check out a few screenshots of their post here, or click here to see the whole article on their site.

Exciting stuff, right?! I’m still pinching myself over being featured (soon-to-be-twice!) in a blog with such high standards, and a such a reputation in the pet industry for only showing truly outstanding work. YAY!

Now, there’s a difference between being featured for stylized pet portraiture and being featured for national event coverage… so I’m equally thrilled (just in a different way!) to say that my photos from the Loews Dog Surfing Competition were requested & published by the UK Daily Mail! (Looks like I haven’t lost my journalism touch… shooting for a paper was actually how I got started in photography, and let me tell you, it’s not always easy to capture photos that stand out from alllllll the other photographers’ at the event!) The Daily Mail is one of the UK’s most popular news sources with millions of readers, and they published an article the day after the event, detailing the competitors & atmosphere of the day. The article is here on their site, or you can just take a quick look below:

(This first photo actually isn’t mine; it was taken years ago and is just a stock photo showing Tillman.)

There’s Ricochet the SURF-ice Dog, and a couple more competitors!

(To be completely honest, I think they lost a bit of saturation in the photos’ colors, which slightly disappointed me… but hey, I’m a perfectionist! haha!)

So it’s been a big week, I suppose! :)  And I think a few more good things are coming soon… you can keep up with all the updates by scrolling down to the bottom of this page and entering your email address under “subscribe”. You’ll get a cute little one-liner email whenever I publish a new post here! That way you won’t miss any of the exciting news. I may have just arrived in San Diego, but I have a feeling there are PLENTY of good things on their way! :)

Loews Surf Dog Competition 2013 – Imperial Beach, San Diego, CA

Monday, June 24th, 2013

What an incredible day at the beach! Sun, sand, and surfing dogs – add in a few doggles and you can’t beat that combination! Saturday was the 8th Annual Loews Surf Dog Competition, and let me tell you, if you weren’t there, you missed out! The streets of Imperial Beach were jam-packed with cars for miles in every direction; I was shocked at how many people & dogs were there. Then again, this was my first-ever dog surfing competition, so I didn’t know what I was getting myself into… still, I think anyone would have said “wow” upon seeing thousands of human & canine spectators in one place! It was awesome to see everyone supporting the dogs out there in the water; there were huge rounds of applause and cheers for any dog that successfully rode in to shore! And of course plenty of “oooh”s and laughs at the wipeouts! Check out a few of my favorite photos from the event!

This is Abbie Girl, an Australian kelpie & the champion of the small dog category! She was a total pro.

Sometimes I found the people’s faces just as amusing as the dogs’! Heehee!

And let’s give a little credit to the people out there! I think the dogs may have actually had a pretty easy time, just standing on those boards… their human helpers were always in prime position to get smacked by the waves!

This guy was such a goofball – and a great surfer, too!

I was SO impressed by the dogs that actually shared surfboards!! These two worked the board like it was nothing.

Here’s another reason the event was so exciting: we were in the presence of celebrities!  This is Ricochet, a service dog that surfs with people with disabilities! She’s an incredible surfer and a beautiful spirit. Check out her website here, and if the videos there don’t make you cry or at least tear up, well, you’re stronger than me. She also has a super-active Facebook page!

And here’s the one-and-only Tillman! He’s mostly famous for skateboarding (check out the video that made him famous; it has 20 million hits, no big deal) but he was out there on a surfboard on Saturday! He won the large dog competition!

Dogs of all different shapes & sizes were out there..

The day was gorgeous, of course – it’s San Diego! (gorgeous enough to give me a bit of a sunburn, unfortunately. haha oh well.)

I found it fascinating that there were photographers out there, in the waves, with waterproof casings for their cameras! That is DEFINITELY where I want to be next year!!

This photo sums up the spirit of the day, I think – goooo surf dogs! The cheers were so loud! :)

Whew, that was a lot of photos! And believe it or not, these were just my favorite images from the whole event! If you’d like to see more, or if your dog surfed and you’d like to purchase a print or digital image, visit the event gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com.

Oh, and here’s something fun: my photos from the competition were internationally published! Here’s the story from the UK Daily Mail, which asked for my photos to include in their article! I thought I’d left the world of journalism photography behind a few years ago… apparently not! :)

I hope you enjoyed seeing all the photos of these talented dogs! If you’ve never been here before, welcome! You’re visitng my blog, which is where I post about recent events (like this one) and sessions. My website is different; it’s where you can check out my whole portfolio and find info about a session with your dogs! Last but not least, my Facebook page is a pretty fun place too! :) Take a look, click “like”, and you’ll get to see more fun photos like these in your newsfeed!

Thanks for visiting!  :)
