One-Year Anniversary Celebration of the San Diego Studio!

Sunday, June 15th, 2014

Hooray! I’m so excited! Today (June 15, 2014) is the one-year anniversary celebration of signing the lease and getting the keys to 3251 Adams Avenue, the location that I picked for my studio here in San Diego!  I can hardly believe it’s been a whole year of living & doing business in America’s Finest City… and honestly, compared to this moment last year, it feels like a lot has changed. I actually have friends in town, haha (we moved here without knowing anyone!), I have an employee (yay for Haley!), and an entirely new marketing plan for this changing & growing business. Sometimes it’s easy to look back and only see the challenges that I’ve faced along the way – because it hasn’t been an easy ride – but there have been lots of little victories too! And today is for celebrating those moments and clients that have been the inspiration behind Allison Shamrell Pet Photography‘s first year in San Diego!

First things first: the prizes up for grabs! I have First Place, Second Place and Third Place goodies for a few very lucky winners! Drumroll please…

anniversary celebration grand prize

This is The Beagle Package, as outlined on the main website, and the only “catch” is that it has to take place in the Embarcadero, just south of Seaport Village! This is a location that I’ve been dying to photograph ever since moving here and seeing it for the first time – the well-kept grass, the big old trees, the striking city skyline in the background – I think it’ll be an incredibly dynamic place for a session, so I’m treating one lucky first-place winner and their dog(s) to this $175 value!

(This session covers one hour of session time & up to two dogs. More dogs and/or time can be added on for an additional fee.)

And the next prize…

This is another BIG prize, and it’s for TWO winners! It brings the cost of The Beagle Package down to just $75, for example… or you can spend it on products after your Dalmatian Package, which already comes with $100 in print credit, for a total product credit of $200! And with this, you’ll have the flexibility to go anywhere in San Diego for your session – whether you’d prefer your house, my studio, your dog’s favorite park, or anywhere in between. If you met me at the big San Diego Humane Society Walk for Animals event a few weeks ago, you know this is the same prize that a lucky drawing winner scored that day!

And the final prize…

anniversary third place prize

This is a lovely fine art print, 8×10″ in size, that’s mounted to styrene (a firm, acid-free backing material) that helps the print stay strong & flat. The styrene adds thickness, so you can either place this print in a frame, or prop it up on an easel for even simpler display! Either way, it’s a beautiful piece with the quote “Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole” by Roger Caras. And guess what: the design will be revealed on the Facebook page tomorrow, so be sure to “like” the page to see the finished piece! THREE people can win this prize!

Here’s how to enter:

Simply leave a comment on this blog post with your name, your pet’s name(s), their breed(s), and why you want to win!

Win a bonus entry by sharing this blog post on Facebook, too! Just leave a separate comment saying that you did so.

The final drawing will happen on Tuesday, June 17 at 5:00 pm, and winners will be contacted via email.

Good luck!

In addition to planning this giveaway, I’ve been reflecting a bit, too. Back when I first got the keys to the studio, I wrote a blog post which you can see here about how excited I was for the future, and everything else I was going through. Part of that post says:

I’m feeling a lot of different emotions right now – probably what every photographer that’s opened a studio goes through. I’m scared the space won’t live up to the ideas I have in my head if I can’t decorate it well enough. I’m scared for my upcoming bill at Home Depot. I’m scared that the investment will start to weigh on me. I’m scared of a break-in. But at the same time, I’m so excited to have a space in the community where I can invite people, clients & dogs over! I’m excited to be able to simply say, yes, I have a studio! I’m excited to decorate & design it, and I’m excited to have a place that can do everything I need it for: client meetings, shoots, ordering sessions, etc. Honestly, I’m a little bit excited to separate my business life from my personal life, because – not gonna lie – my time-management skills could use a bit of work (coughfacebookcough) and I think having limited access to my files at home might be just the push I need to be as productive as possible while working.

Looking back, I’m happy to say that the studio has lived up to the ideas I had in my head. The investment was a big one, and my Home Depot bills certainly added up, but all the progress slowly came to a close, and now I’m proud for my clients to visit my San Diego studio on a daily basis. Not to mention – I’ve met some incredible pets and seen some great photo sessions happen here! Check out just a few of the animals I’ve worked with this year, in & out of the studio:

So of course, there’s no other way I can finish this blog post than by profusely thanking the clients that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting this past year. There would be no anniversary celebration without you. Thank you – each of you – for everything, because while I feel honored to have given you memories & artwork of your family, I feel like you’ve given me so much more. Thank you.

Super-Fun Pet Photography Session with Roxy & Madison!

Thursday, June 12th, 2014

I can’t begin to tell you what a FUN pet photography session I had with sisters Roxy & Madison! Roxy is an 11-year-old labrador who takes it slow these days, and Madison is a 2-year-old Cavachon (that’s a Cavalier King Charles spaniel & Bichon Frise mix) that has all the energy in the world! So in fact, it was a bit of a challenge for me behind the lens, balancing & bringing out the best in these two very different personalities. I learned that Roxy, uncharacteristic to her labrador breeding, doesn’t like the water – but then again, she likes snuggling on the couch and eating anything at all, which are very labrador-esque qualities! Madison is a little fireball whose favorite treat is bits of cheese; she was a joy to photograph because she was up for anything (as long as cheese was involved) and always had a smile on her face! I absolutely love these dogs… they’re both happy girls who are absolutely devoted to their parents – who, by the way, own the very best doggie daycare & boarding center in all of El Cajon! It was a privilege to work with the fabulous people behind Camp Bow Wow, and we’re in the midst of putting together a few special offers for each of our clientele… stay tuned for more info on those specials, here and on my Facebook page and their page too.

This is Roxy! (And her mom!)

And here’s Madison! This is exactly how she always runs, haha!

Is Madison in training to be a circus performer? Nah, just showing off for treats. :)

Connie & Mark, thank you for a ridiculously fun pet photography session! Your dogs crack me up. Can’t wait to see you both again soon!

Blitz the German Shepherd Mix in San Diego, CA

Monday, June 9th, 2014

Any way I describe Blitz, I feel like I won’t be doing him justice. I mean, I could tell you that he’s a German shepherd mix, but that doesn’t explain his brownish-black coat with the tiniest puff of pure white fur on the end of his tail, or the borderline-out-of-control shaggy fur around his neck and chest. I could tell you that he’s a rescue and got a bit nervous during our session, but that doesn’t give nearly enough credit to his mom and all the work they’ve done together to make Blitz a much more confident and happy dog than he used to be. I could also tell you that he loves his parents, but that wouldn’t be the same as showing you the adoring look in his eyes as he looks up at them in one of the many family photos we captured.

So – gosh – how can I tell you about these German shepherd mix photos? Blitz is a handsome boy that lives with his parents just down the street from my studio, in Normal Heights, and we took our session nice & slow because he’s often uncertain in new situations. This meant plenty of time for walk breaks and running loose – well, as much as his old knees would let him, that is!  :)  Blitz was a wonderful subject to photograph, and his parents were willing to jump in for plenty of photos themselves, too! I love it when my clients want to make an appearance in their images, but I’ll be honest – it made picking photos for this sneak peek a bit difficult, since I loooove so many of the three of them! (I like to double-check that my human clients love their photos just as much as I do before I post them online, haha.) So here’s handsome Blitz – filling up the spotlight all by himself with all his fluffy fur! :)

I just love those touches of orange on the edges of his fur!

Chris & Rachel, thank you for such a great session! I can’t wait to see you back in the studio soon!

Westie Photos of Bolt in Tierrasanta, San Diego, CA

Thursday, June 5th, 2014

Let me tell you: Westies are smart. They’re also quick runners, they’re hunters, and they’re completely adorable – but perhaps most of all, they’re really smart. And these Westie photos feature Bolt, a little guy who’s a great example of the famous Westie intelligence! For example, his mom tells me that he knows the exact turn they take when they drive to the vet! His demeanor changes completely if they turn (at Carl’s Jr., apparently) compared to when they keep driving straight, because he knows that turning means he’s headed to the vet… incredible, right?

Bolt is a 5-year-old smartypants who has absolutely stolen the hearts of his family. But at his core, he’s a mama’s boy: he wasn’t too sure about our photo session, especially at first, so he often stayed close by her feet and even jumped up on her legs, asking to be picked up & snuggled! It was too cute… and with a face like that, how could she ever say no? :)

This is Bolt!

We found a gorgeous field of flowers in a nearby park… I just love his white fur amidst the greens and purples of the flowers!

Linda & Ashley, thank you so much for helping Bolt warm up to the camera – he struck plenty of adorable poses with your encouragement! These are several of my favorite Westie photos I’ve ever taken, and I can’t wait to show you the rest! :)
