Abby & Jackson, Doggy Siblings in Escondido

Tuesday, November 9th, 2021

I can’t tell you what a special place I hold in my heart for repeat clients. To be trusted to photograph & document someone’s family is a huge responsibility, and for that same family to ask me to do it again when they’re at a different stage in their lives? It’s an honor, it really is! But this session was a little bittersweet, because although I loved reconnecting with this family, the dogs I photographed a few years ago (JD & Anna) aren’t here anymore today. They’ve passed on, unfortunately, and they are very sorely missed. So instead, I got to photograph two dogs of the exact same breeds – Jackson & Abby, puppies from the very same breeder – who have some very big shoes (paws?) to fill! :)

All joking aside, let’s be honest, no dog can ever fill the shoes of the dog(s) that came before them. And nor should they; they’re different animals with their own unique personalities. So while I was thrilled to meet Jackson & Abby purely because I had photographed their older siblings (predecessors, shall we say?), I was also excited to get to know them as new, fresh personalities. And they were so much fun to photograph! Don’t get me wrong, I often caught myself comparing them to their elder siblings: Abby, for instance, is a lovebug and just wanted to cuddle, whereas Anna (the elder Anatolian shepherd) was far more stoic and independent. But I’m happy to confirm that both Abby & Jackson are total sweethearts, and a joy to photograph!

After about 10 minutes of excited “getting to know you” time, both dogs settled right down and became the perfect models. We found the prettiest parts of their yard to pose in – spots where they don’t typically hang out as often, but they did a great job regardless. They also showed me their favorite hangout spots like a massive boulder that’s perfect for doggy sunbathing. Both are such good dogs, very loving, and absolutely crazy about their mom! It was adorable to see. Jackson and Abby are also incredibly independent pups; Rhodesian ridgebacks and Anatolian shepherds are strong-willed breeds that tend to do what they want even with all the training in the world. That little quirk was on display a few times during our session, haha – but thankfully they were willing to cooperate and do what we asked of them!

I love visiting their home, since they have a huge amount of property to explore. It provided some fresh perspectives and we were able to get a variety of family portraits as well as individual photos of the dogs. We even got to recreate some photos in the exact same place as we did back in 2018! I hope you enjoy seeing a few photos from our session, as I prep the rest of the images for their parents to see very soon.

This is Abby, the sweet girl I would have loved to take home with me. Look at that face!

And this is Jackson, the handsome boy who simply can’t take a bad picture. He’s a happy, adventurous boy!

And while we have plenty of beautiful photos of both dogs together, with and without their parents, I couldn’t resist sharing this outtake! They loooooved the treats their mom had prepped for them, haha!

Julie & Curt, thank you so much for inviting me to your home a second time! I’m excited to share the rest of our portraits with you very soon!

Porter, the Anxious Yet Adorable Puppy

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2021

Stop what you’re doing – you’ll thank me later – and come meet this adorable 6-month-old rescue puppy, Porter! He was recently adopted from a rescue organization in the Little Italy area of San Diego. And as his dad cleverly says, Porter comes from a long, established line of street dogs! :)

My favorite part of their story comes from the first time Porter met his dad: they had gone on a walk around Little Italy, to get acquainted, and afterwards Porter fell asleep on his shoes when they were done. It speaks volumes to me that he would immediately trust him that much! Porter’s trust isn’t earned very easily – trust me on this one – so I think that story is all the proof I’ll ever need that Porter & his dad are the perfect match.

My second favorite thing about Porter and his dad’s story? Turns out Porter is a little timid around new people, due to some anxiety issues. He’s had some sleeping issues at night, and separation anxiety too – so his dad has kindly worked with him by busting out the sleeping bag to be near him, just outside of his crate, all night long. Once the sleeping bag was working to keep Porter calm & happy, he “graduated” to sleeping on the couch! This went on for weeks – all to keep Porter as comfortable as possible. Isn’t that wonderful?! That story just blew me away with how dedicated he is to his boy! Thankfully, Porter is doing much better in his crate now, and his anxiety issues are lessening. Their connection is real, and as a result, it’s safe to say that Porter only has eyes for his dad.

The nice thing about Porter’s nervousness around other people & wanting to stay close to his dad was that he was able to be off-leash in some relatively crowded parts of town. No issues, no running away whatsoever – which is amazing for a puppy! If he got distracted by some smells, he was always quick to come trotting right back. I lovingly nicknamed him the “velcro puppy”, since he never wanted to be more than a couple of inches from his dad. I wonder if that’s a personality trait that will stick around as time goes on…

We started our photo session at the Spanish Art Village at Balboa Park, and then headed over to Coronado Beach. I think Porter’s favorite part of the session was playing fetch on the beach!

This is Porter. That face… what a handsome boy!

When I say he looks up to his dad, I mean it literally & figuratively.

I’m pretty sure these two can handle anything life throws at them, as long as they’re together.

Great Photo Sessions with Shy Dogs

Sunday, March 8th, 2020

Do you ever find yourself wanting to have professional photos taken of your dog, but then you aren’t so sure, because your dog happens to be shy or skittish? You might be thinking “what if they don’t warm up to the photographer? What if they are camera-shy and won’t even participate, or they hate the whole experience? Then I’m stuck paying for portraits that I won’t even like!” I’ll let you in on a secret – you aren’t the first person to have these concerns and you definitely won’t be the last! In fact, you’d be in pretty good company amongst my clients. This is a common issue (that isn’t really an issue after all) that many dog parents are concerned about. I’ve got good news for you: I know how to have a truly fantastic photo session with incredibly shy dogs. I’ve studied canine body language & psychology, and I know some of the best ways to work with skittish pets that both keeps them at ease and still captures their personality. You can’t force anything, and I certainly don’t want to force it either – but preparing correctly for a portrait session and giving my undivided attention are keys to getting those natural, fun, “frame-worthy” images!

I’m pretty proud to say that I’ve never had a photo session where the dog was too shy to get plenty of portraits. Each and every time I’ve been able to work with a dog to bring out their confidence and create some gorgeous images! (And I’ve been doing this since 2010!) Over the years I’ve developed some tips & tricks to help my photo sessions go smoother while making it a pleasant experience for everyone involved. I want to share with you 4 ways that I go above and beyond to make sure you and your pup are 100% comfortable with me:

First, Let’s be Friends!

Before every photo session we have a consultation, which is basically a meet-and-greet with you and your dog(s). The camera doesn’t even come out! This works perfectly because we meet in a casual atmosphere at my studio with few distractions. Its all about getting to know each other as a friend beforehand so I won’t be a stranger who suddenly shows up at the photo session. Even better: if you’re having a studio session then your dog will be super familiar with the studio environment. We build a foundation of trust and a relationship that is important for setting the tone… and that eventually leads to a successful portrait session!

Big Long Lenses

My absolute favorite lens to use is my L-series 70-200mm f/2.8 IS! For those of you who are like “okay Allison… that means nothing to me”, haha, let’s just say that it’s a super long lens that allows me to stay a long distance away from my client if needed without compromising an ounce of quality. I’m able to put the dog at ease since I’m not hovering over them or in their face, all while still getting those beautiful images you’re hoping for!

Introducing the Camera Slowly

I want to provide a calm environment for your pet to ensure a successful photo session. So in order to do that, I introduce the camera verrryyyy slowly. I usually start out with the camera on the ground for the dog to take a look at, maybe sniff around a bit – basically to let them know that it isn’t anything to be afraid of. Next, I let their parents hold the camera and maybe take a picture or two, so the dog can hear how it sounds when it clicks. By doing this, the dog eventually views the camera as not threatening because if mom and dad are holding it it can’t be too bad, right? (It’s all about going at the dog’s pace, not mine!)

Positive Reinforcement

Lastly, I’ve found that positive reinforcement throughout the photo session is such a game changer for the shy, timid dog! The treats start to flow in hopes that the dog will warm up to the idea of being photographed. I’m talking lots and lots of treats. And if your pet is more toy-motivated than treat-motivated we’ll use toys instead! I often don’t make eye contact, come up to the dog, or even pet them at first to keep things calm and any anxiety at bay. Another thing that helps is having mom and dad nearby constantly giving praises and encouragement! If they know their parents are being supportive then they’re more likely to relax and feel safe – which is our goal!

“Our dog, Ele, is not as social or gregarious as some dogs and often acts very timid around new people, but Allison was able to work with her to bring out her best and capture what makes her such a wonderful dog (in our eyes) in her gorgeous photographs.  I appreciate the extra time and effort Allison put into our photo shoot and her attention to making the whole experience absolutely unforgettable.”  – Sumrall H.

One of the things I love most about this “job” (sometimes I still can’t believe I’m living my dream as a pet photographer!) is making a connection with my clients, both human and canine. Whether your pet is shy or completely outgoing, I aim to photograph them just the way they are while creating a safe environment. And at the end of the day, it’s all about having fun!

Daisy, Hank, & Rusty – 3 Little Dogs from Mira Mesa

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019

I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter family to work with than the Stone family! They were such a pleasure to get to know, and during the session they were up for anything! I really appreciated how they were willing to go with the flow and listen to what the dogs needed and wanted to do during our time together. I always try to go into photo sessions with a plan, but often times the plan simply falls apart – which is nobody’s fault of course, that’s just dogs being dogs doing what they want to do! (And usually we end up with something much better than my plan anyway, haha!) But their willingness to just “roll with it” made this photo session a whole lot of fun. Maybe that made things a little chaotic at times, but I think this session serves as proof that sometimes it doesn’t look like much is “happening” to the bystander; it probably doesn’t feel or seem like we’re creating artwork. But oftentimes all the elements come together in the final images, and I am definitely loving these results!

They chose a great spot in Mira Mesa that I’ve never been to before (which was super exciting for me, haha)! It was a community park that was totally deserted – so. much. fun. We were able to play fetch on the baseball field, run around in the grass, and watch the dogs just let loose!

Daisy is the only girl of the pack – girl power! She is a little fireball and is the one who likes to live life at HIGH speed. She was super excited to be at the Mira Mesa park to play fetch. And oh man… she can really move! I was totally impressed by her athleticism. If I had to guess, I think playing fetch and running around in the empty field was her favorite part of the afternoon by far. This girl loves her tennis balls!

And Daisy wanted to make sure you know how much she loves chasing her ball – so here she is just moments after the above image!

Her brother Hank is a little cutie too! He is a Chihuahua mix and allllll personality. He has this sweet-and-sometimes-sassy little attitude that somehow comes through no matter what he’s doing. He is not shy about what he wants and doesn’t want! And he was a joy to be around, even if he did keep me on my toes. :)

And last but certainly not least, they recently adopted a new dog named Rusty. He is a beagle who has lived his whole life in a laboratory. Unfortunately, beagles get tested on a lot for different products, and Rusty hasn’t had the easiest or happiest life. The good news is is that these days if he’s enjoying himself you can hardly even tell what he’s been through! He’s a total sweetheart and really enjoys being around people. He’s happy when meeting new people and a lot of things are going on and he gets to be social and explore. I love that about him – talk about giving the world a second chance despite what has been done to him! I think he is just amazing and so is his family for adopting him and giving him a life full of love. He’s fitting in really well with his new family – in fact, he has been given the award of #1 couch potato! If he can’t be out meeting new people, his idea of a good time is sitting on the couch, relaxing. (Can’t say I blame him, haha!) So the fact that we were out in the park in Mira Mesa for a photo session… nottttt really high on his priority list. He was a little slow to get into the rhythm of things – but as soon as we got to Balboa Park he absolutely came alive! His tail was just wagging and he was even “high stepping” a little bit. It was an immediate difference – so cool to see!

Thank you Katherine and Neil for a lovely afternoon with your 3 amazing dogs! I can’t wait for you to see all of our images soon!

Buster the 10-Year-Old Staffy Mix

Friday, October 18th, 2019

I am so happy to introduce you to Buster! He’s a 10-year-old American Staffordshire terrier mix, a total sweetheart, super easy-going, and an as-long-as-my-mom’s-here-I’m-happy kind of dog. He and his mom actually live just a few blocks away from my studio, and that’s where we started our photo session! But after a few minutes we noticed he was somewhat uncomfortable, and just not loving the studio. He was trying his best – but it was clear that it simply wasn’t the ideal place to be. So we decided to adjust our plans and head to Balboa Park shortly into our session – which turned out to a great thing for him! He really came alive in the wide-open environment and it was almost like his head was on a swivel, taking it all in. He was ready to be on guard for his mom (watching verrrrry closely the families playing on the nearby playground, haha!) and it was too cute!

And my favorite part? Our timing was perfect when we arrived; the lighting was absolutely gorgeous. We headed over to a little corner of the park where it was relatively quiet, and he did some more of his favorite pose (laying down). He is 10 years old after all, so we cut him some slack, haha! He did some walking around and even did a little jogging with his mom. (Be forewarned: you might get a workout in the middle of your photo session!) And Buster never gave us any trouble because his mom brought his faaaaavorite treat – chicken! So as long as he had his mom and his chicken, he was a happy boy! :)

Overall, we had a really relaxing and peaceful photo session. Buster is doing great even though his mom is starting to see signs of his age. (You gotta love how healthy mutts tend to be! Buster’s staffy mix heritage is certainly doing him favors these days.) She wanted to get this photo session on our calendars before anything takes a turn, which I think is a perfect idea. I was thrilled to be able to do this for them and can’t wait to show off the rest of his portraits at his ordering session!
