Keeping Your Dog Entertained During Quarantine

Friday, April 3rd, 2020

Times are undeniably strange these days during the coronavirus quarantine. Days are starting to run together, and I think just about everyone is missing social interaction! I’ll admit that I’m feeling just a tad bit stir crazy – maybe you are too? Thankfully, I’ve come up with a few fun ideas that may keep you and your pup from too much boredom. Since we all have a bit of extra time on our hands these days, let’s go ahead and embrace this 1-on-1 time with our dogs!

New Puzzle Toys!

I’m not sure if I know any dog that doesn’t love a brand spankin’ new toy! Interactive treat toys like a puzzle toy can keep them entertained for quite a while. A treat toy like a Kong that can be filled with different yummy things is another great start – did you know you can fill it with peanut butter (or their favorite treat of choice) and freeze it? It’ll take them a lot longer to work on after it spends a few hours in the freezer. I’d say that’s a win-win for everyone!

Another suggestion I have is to rotate toys throughout the next few weeks. For example, this week use only let them play with a handful of their favorite toys, and then next week put those away and put out a totally different selection instead. Mixing it up keeps things fresh!

Muttropolis, a pet store in San Diego, has a ton of unique toys to choose from to keep your pet busy. HERE are all their interactive toys in one place, which is probably where you’ll want to start. Take a look and treat your dog while supporting a local business (which is so important to do right now)! Did you know they’re also offering free shipping or curbside pickup, whichever you prefer?

Also – do you have a backyard to play in? If so, have you ever introduced your dog to a bubble toy?!

Get Active!

How about going for a quick walk or jog? Getting fresh air isn’t only beneficial for your pet, but also for you!

The owner of Zen Pet, Denise, says:

As our beloved animals watch us spending more time at home, perhaps glued to our computers or iPhones trying to stay connected on social media. Perhaps our love for them can be our reminders for us to put down the phone for a few minutes and get some fresh air.

The benefits we receive would be much needed vitamin D & exercise “while keeping our social distancing” and our doggies would be delighted to get more exercise, smell the spring flowers and can collect the smells of the day. Some countries have reached the point where all movement outside is restricted, but even in those places walking the dog is allowed as an essential exemption.

Our pets are our greatest teachers in uncertain times, learn from them. It’s simple; love one another.

I love that perspective! How true! Zen Pet is one of the top pet sitting & dog walking companies in San Diego, so Denise knows what she’s talking about.

Alternatively: do you have stairs in your house? Put them to use and tire your dog out by jogging up and down the stairs together, or maybe tossing a ball up a flight to fetch. (Safely, of course! No tripping over each other or tumbling down the stairs!) It’s not only a workout for them, but for you too! I’m willing to bet that you’ll both get a good nap afterwards. :)

Training

Who says an old dog can’t learn new tricks? (Or re-learn the old ones he/she should already know?) Training and working on obedience is a great way to bond and make use of the extra time you get to spend with each other. Click HERE to get a list of some fantastic ideas on different tricks to work on to get you started!

The incredible trainers over at Specialty Dog Training in North County are suggesting one specific skill to work on:

Name recognition and focus – it is so important for your dog to love their name, respond to it consistently, and focus on you instead of the millions of distractions around them. By having strong name recognition, you’ll be able to get your dog’s attention and they will respond better and follow commands better when they are tuned-in and focused on you.

Click HERE to see their tips on exactly how to work on name recognition at home right now. (They also list some pretty incredible deals they’re having right now!)

Or: have you ever tried to set up a makeshift agility course in the living room? If not, I highly recommend it! You can keep it simple by having them jump over the couch cushions or go through a blanket you set up as a barrier. Successfully completing an obstacle course will definitely help boost their confidence!

Games

One of my personal favorite games that I play with Bailey is “find the treat!” It’s super simple – I let her sniff a treat, have her sit & stay, I then go hide the treat somewhere in the next room in a place that’s mildly challenging to find. Then I call her, she searches for the treat, and eventually she finds it & we celebrate! This is a great way to work on some obedience while also giving her some positive reinforcement. Bailey is allllll about treats and would probably agree that it’s her favorite game too!

I hope these ideas spark some inspiration during this trying time. Not to mention provide a bit of distraction too; reading the news can be a scary way to spend time these days, but dogs have an amazing way of centering us in the moment and reminding us to simply be happy. And who couldn’t use more of that right now?

I’d love to hear how you are passing the time with your pet while you’re both in quarantine! Stay safe, everyone!

Bernie & Otis, Two Fluffy Pups from Rancho Santa Fe

Thursday, February 14th, 2019

I recently had a playful and action-packed session with Bernie and Otis! Of course, when I say “action-packed”, I mean Otis doing most of the action and Bernie happily watching his (big) little bro! :) And I learned that even though they don’t go at the same speed anymore, one thing they do have in common is their love for treats. Especially since they don’t get treats on a regular basis – special occasions only! (Which means I might have been their new favorite person during the session, haha!)

Bernie is a 13-year-old schnoodle and a sweet little mama’s boy! He has such a calm nature and is just a very good boy. I really love photographing senior dogs – it’s an honor to capture all their distinguished gray fur, and so much fun to imagine how differently they used to look and act. According to his parents, Bernie was very much the energetic dog in his younger years, but has since passed the torch on to Otis. (I suppose that’s allowed when you’re 13!)

Otis, the handsome 3-year-old labradoodle, came to the session ready to play! He is a dog on a mission when it comes to fetching tennis balls! His parents have a gorgeous estate in Rancho Santa Fe full of lush greenery near their barn, which made the perfect backdrop for photos AND the perfect spot for Otis to lose a ball! At various times we thought we would never find the ball in the tall grass, but nope! There was no stopping that boy when it came to his toys. Here he is on the horse trail on their property – I was tempted to share one of his many action photos, but I couldn’t resist that head tilt! :)

After we were done playing near the stables, we set off for the beach in Del Mar. Let me tell you something: it was COLD out there! I’ve got to hand it to this family for sticking it out with me, despite none of us being quite prepared for the chilly weather, because getting out there for the beautiful sunset was totally worth it! Between the beach being wide open & uncrowded, the stunning sunset & colors that lit up the sky, and the lovely people & dogs to photograph, I’d call this a win in my book.

Thank you Trish & Ralph for braving the cool February evening with me for a fun session with your four-legged kiddos! I’m excited to get together with you both again soon!

Frank & Ollie, the pug puppy & tabby kitten from San Diego!

Monday, November 26th, 2018

Should I pinch myself? Am I dreaming?

Nope: I truly had the chance to work with the most adorable animals!! Frank the pug puppy was only 11 weeks old at the time of our session, which is quite frankly an incredible time to have a photo session. Seriously – I am SO happy his parents gave me a call well in advance of when they wanted their session to take place. It gave us all the time we needed to plan the perfect experience, and Frank was at the perfect age! Ollie, his brother, is a rescue kitten from a litter in which he was (very sadly) the only survivor. He & his siblings were all diagnosed with panleukopenia (which is the feline version of parvovirus), so it was truly a miracle that Ollie’s foster family helped him make it through. But now he’s about 6 months old, and is one of the most inquisitive, happy, intelligent cats I’ve ever met! He comes when you call his name, and will do just about anything for a treat (including, I learned, let his parents put a harness on him so we could go outside). Today, Frank & Ollie live happily in central San Diego, doing their best impression of Milo & Otis. :)

And I have to admit, I was impressed with how these brothers get along – their parents definitely made the right move in adopting them both at around the same time, so they could grow up together and bond from an early age. Plus, they’re both already so well-trained! Do you know any other 11-week-old puppies who can hold a sit-stay, or toilet-trained 6-month-old kittens? I don’t!! Many first-time pet parents just “wing it” and figure things out as they go, and while that can often work out just fine, Frank & Ollie’s parents have taken the opposite approach, and have invested plenty of time educating themselves on all the best things they can do for their new animals. It really shows; these two are already such happy, confident kiddos. They have the cutest little friendship, and I really loved photographing them both!

This, of course, is Frank! With the biggest little head tilt I’ve ever seen. Come on, can you even stand how cute he is?!

Ollie the cat is a gorgeous little kitten; I already know he’s going to grow up into a strikingly handsome orange tabby!

We also visited a place in San Diego that most animals aren’t allowed to see… I’ll keep the location quiet since we only got in thanks to their dad’s work. But let’s just say it was somewhere I never thought I’d get to experience the inside of! (Yes, that’s a remnant of a plant on Frank’s face… something tells me he was “sampling” his surroundings!)

Ollie, on the other hand, used the outing as an opportunity to keep a lookout for small animals & anything else to chase, smell and/or play with.

Rachel & Mike, thank you so much for introducing me to your new additions! I can’t wait to get together again soon!!

Bella, Sidecar & Auggie – Two Australian Labradoodles & a Sphynx Cat!

Tuesday, November 13th, 2018

It’s not very often that I get to work with cats and dogs in the same photo session – and it’s even rarer for them to all visit my studio together! So I was absolutely thrilled to meet Bella, Sidecar & Auggie recently, because they travel as a family! :)

Bella & Sidecar are Australian Labradoodles, and Auggie is a sphynx cat – so cue the extra excitement I had for this photo session, because I absolutely love working with breeds that you simply don’t meet every day! And these animals didn’t disappoint; they all had distinct personalities & unique quirks that became clear during our session… they may all belong to the same family, but they’re each so different!! So let me introduce you to them, one by one…

This, of course, is Auggie! He’s a confident young boy, and he loved exploring every square inch of my studio. We convinced him to hang out on the backdrop with a few toys – thank goodness his hunting instinct is so strong, haha! As a result we ended up with a few action photos that I’m pretty excited about, but at the end of the day, some of my favorite portraits we captured are of his calmer moments. He’s absolutely stunning!!

Then we visited Old Poway Park! (Auggie came too, but he preferred to hang out in his carrier while we explored the park.) This is Bella, the more confident of the two Australian Labradoodles. She was camera-ready within minutes of starting our session, and I simply loved all the unique expressions she sent my way! She’s a cute little lovebug and the camera absolutely loved her (I did too, let’s be honest).

And this is Sidecar, Bella’s brother! Unlike his siblings, he made sure that we took our sweet time when it came to his solo portraits… the camera was NOT his favorite thing. (And by “not his favorite thing” I mean he was terrified of it.) Regardless, I have a few tricks up my sleeve – so I was thrilled when Sidecar eventually relaxed and revealed his happy smile!

Brother and sister. They’re so adorable.

Jinhee, thank you so much for introducing me to your family! I’m so excited to get together again soon & show you the rest of our images!!

Tillie the Golden Retriever, at the Park in San Diego

Wednesday, October 31st, 2018

New plan:

  1. Invent a cloning machine.
  2. Clone Tillie.
  3. Photograph her every day.

Sounds like a great plan to me! ;)

Tille the 1-year-old red golden retriever is an absolute sweetheart, a mama’s girl and a dream to photograph. Like any good golden, she loves her parents, her tennis ball and treats – and happily enjoyed plenty of all 3 “rewards” during our photo session! We started at San Dieguito County Park in Del Mar, where fetch was first on Tillie’s list. And Tillie doesn’t play fetch like most other dogs: she brings the ball back about halfway to the person who threw it. Not the whole way – so fetch is truly a “team sport”, haha! We even decided to take her off-leash as we played, to really allow her to let loose and run with abandon… and she was mostly a good girl with her newfound freedom! Although the park was a big & interesting place, her attachment to her parents (and also maybe her love of treats) brought her back to us every time. Good girl, Tillie. We spent the rest of the sun-drenched afternoon in the grass, relaxing and snuggling, and Tillie posed like a total pro. (Was she a model in a past life?)

She loves fetch!

I’m absolutely loving the backlighting on her coat… I know that’s a nerdy photographer thing to say, but I think it lights her up like a full-body halo! So pretty!

I think a smile is her natural, resting expression. Even when we ask her to sit in weird, thick succulent-esque bushes.

happy red golden retriever

We eventually headed to a different park for a completely different look – Old Poway Park has railroad cars, old wooden doorways and all kinds of fun things to explore. Tillie hopped right up on this rock and took in the view, as if she was princess of the park!

Nicole & Jerad, thank you for introducing me to your sweet girl! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our portraits soon – Tillie did a great job! :)
