Ace, the Happy Golden Retriever

Tuesday, July 27th, 2021

Ace is a golden retriever who is simply a wonderful, happy senior boy! He’s 13 years old and an absolute delight. His mom describes him as “a ball of sunshine” and I couldn’t agree more! He’s a friend to everyone and was not shy at all – not even for a second – when we first met at our pre-session consultation. He made a comfy spot right in my lap and I instantly knew we were going to be best friends. And since he’s very social, I had a hunch that he was going to be easy to photograph… turns out, my instincts were right and Ace did not disappoint!

Did I mention that he’s obsessed with his mom? Because it’s true, and it’s completely adorable! They have such a strong bond, if not one of the strongest bonds between a pet and person that I’ve ever seen. They were pretty much attached at the hip! She gushes over him and he reciprocates the best way a dog can, with his body language. Which means that while he does love meeting new people, he makes it clear that mom is his favorite. :)

His mom’s “must have” location spot was the beach – since it’s Ace’s happy place! Now that it’s July we’re finally getting out of that “June gloom” season here in San Diego, thankfully, and it wound up being a beautiful day in Del Mar. Sadly, Ace & his mom are actually about to move out-of-state, so it couldn’t have been more fitting to do a photo session at the beach before they go. I also suggested that we mix it up a bit by going to the park for a bit of variety, and his mom was up for the adventure. We didn’t spend a ton of time at San Dieguito County Park, but Ace loved it there and we ended up with some really unique portraits (that wouldn’t be possible to create at a beach)!

Unfortunately, Ace has not been without his fair share of challenges in his life. He was diagnosed with spinal cancer, and it was quite serious for a while – but he’s now in remission, yay! Cancer is devastating for many golden retrievers and their families… but I’m SO happy that Ace’s story isn’t over. He has many more adventures to come! This happy-go-lucky, fun-seeking, joyful boy made my job easy, and we really enjoyed ourselves during his photo session.

There’s something special about golden sunlight shining on a golden retriever. I can barely handle it.

He brought his whole bandana wardrobe to our photo session… naturally!

Fluffy sand, fluffy dog… I want to jump into this photo, snuggle up and never leave! Haha!

I know he’ll miss the beach, and his mom will too. But he’ll definitely have fun exploring the rivers around their new house!

Thank you, Shannon and Ace, for spending your evening with me! I can’t wait for you to see all the finished portraits very soon!

Simon and Aoife, Siblings

Wednesday, March 11th, 2020

“Siblings (n.) A combination of a best friend and a pain in the neck. They might be the most annoying people around you but you still love them endlessly.” – Anonymous

Simon and Aoife have what I would call the typical brother-and-sister relationship. Aoife is the older sister who seems to roll her eyes and put up with her brother’s antics, whereas Simon couldn’t be more of a younger brother – he’s mischievous, playful, and downright impish. (If Aoife could talk I think she’d agree with me, haha!)

Aoife is a mixed-breed terrier and has a beautiful Irish name, which is pronounced “EE-fah”. She was actually rescued off the streets of Mexico and adopted soon after her dad moved to the United States. It’s so cool to see the bond that Aoife and her dad have developed, since they’ve been together for quite some time now! She is about 13 years old now and is just a sweetheart with a calm, easygoing personality. You can tell that she’s very content and doesn’t need a lot of fancy things… just her dad. (And it’s good thing she’s such a happy girl naturally, because she doesn’t get to play with a lot of toys – her younger brother steals them all!)

Simon is a golden retriever and is the baby of the family at two and a half years old. If he can get away with it, he’ll do it. So even if he already has a great toy, any toy Aoife has (or is eyeing) is better and he feels the need to take it. Of course, right? And since he’s bigger, stronger, and faster, he can! But what I noticed about their relationship is that it’s not like he’s the boss or a bully to her – that’s not the dynamic at all. They actually get along great and accept each other for who they are as siblings. (Which is a pretty great lesson for people too!)

For our photo session, we started in the studio because their parents wanted that classic aesthetic; the studio lets dogs shine and brings out their natural beauty, with no visual distractions. Aoife is one of the most unique-looking, beautiful dogs I’ve ever worked with, so I was thrilled to get her in the studio! She is so photogenic and was happy to pose for us. We had to laugh, though, because their parents were sure that Simon was going to be the “difficult one”. He’s still a puppy and loves to be on the move, which is a recipe for being tricky to photography, but thank goodness: he’s very food-motivated! This helped tremendously and he actually turned out to the easier dog for me to work with! It was a funny surprise and we were all surprised at how well Simon did – really, how well both of them did – for their very first photo session.

We ended up with our fair share of “smiling” photos, but I couldn’t resist sharing this cute dual-head-tilt moment. (I must’ve made the weirdest sound just then, haha!)

We then moved onto Del Mar Beach and made the most out of some slightly cloudy weather! I think Simon may have been the happiest out of all of us since he got to let loose and had plenty of room to run around; he was living his best life. We all had a great time!

Erika & David, thanks for such a fun afternoon! I’ll see you both again very soon!

Tillie the Golden Retriever, at the Park in San Diego

Wednesday, October 31st, 2018

New plan:

  1. Invent a cloning machine.
  2. Clone Tillie.
  3. Photograph her every day.

Sounds like a great plan to me! ;)

Tille the 1-year-old red golden retriever is an absolute sweetheart, a mama’s girl and a dream to photograph. Like any good golden, she loves her parents, her tennis ball and treats – and happily enjoyed plenty of all 3 “rewards” during our photo session! We started at San Dieguito County Park in Del Mar, where fetch was first on Tillie’s list. And Tillie doesn’t play fetch like most other dogs: she brings the ball back about halfway to the person who threw it. Not the whole way – so fetch is truly a “team sport”, haha! We even decided to take her off-leash as we played, to really allow her to let loose and run with abandon… and she was mostly a good girl with her newfound freedom! Although the park was a big & interesting place, her attachment to her parents (and also maybe her love of treats) brought her back to us every time. Good girl, Tillie. We spent the rest of the sun-drenched afternoon in the grass, relaxing and snuggling, and Tillie posed like a total pro. (Was she a model in a past life?)

She loves fetch!

I’m absolutely loving the backlighting on her coat… I know that’s a nerdy photographer thing to say, but I think it lights her up like a full-body halo! So pretty!

I think a smile is her natural, resting expression. Even when we ask her to sit in weird, thick succulent-esque bushes.

We eventually headed to a different park for a completely different look – Old Poway Park has railroad cars, old wooden doorways and all kinds of fun things to explore. Tillie hopped right up on this rock and took in the view, as if she was princess of the park!

Nicole & Jerad, thank you for introducing me to your sweet girl! I can’t wait to show you the rest of our portraits soon – Tillie did a great job! :)

Juneau, Ella & Roxy – A Family of San Diego Dogs

Monday, August 27th, 2018

I absolutely love photo sessions that take place during a time of transition: sometimes it’s for a family who just moved to San Diego, or is just about to move away… or a family that already has 4-legged children and is about to add their first 2-legged child to the family… or perhaps those 2-legged kids are headed off to college and we’re capturing how life has always been before things change. In the case of Ella, Juneau & Roxy, we were celebrating a very happy occasion: Roxy is a brand new member of the family! She’s seriously spicing things up in her new home, too; Ella & Juneau are older pups who’ve been loyal members of the family for many years, and I have a feeling their routine has changed (just a little!) since Roxy came home. But they love their new little sister, especially Juneau; he’s such a great big brother and it’s already clear that he & Roxy have formed a special bond. (And it’s adorable!)

Our photo session took place at Mission Trails Regional Park, as well as at a nearby grassy park for a slight change of scenery. And even though things started out with a bit of chaos, the dogs soon settled into a rhythm of posing for me beautifully. Plus, it helped that we had some yummy treats for them on hand! I have a feeling that the photos from our session will be a fresh, gorgeous complement to the portraits they’ve taken in the past… and I’m so excited to share them with you!

This is Ella! She LOVES treats and has the most beautiful lab smile… one of my favorite moments of our session was when she spontaneously started crawling toward me (okay, let’s be honest, she was probably headed for the treat bag) near the end of our session!

This handsome hunk-a-lunk is Juneau, the golden retriever and mama’s boy of the bunch. Whenever his mom & I stepped more than a few feet away from him, he would whine and fidget – he just looooooves his mom! And he’s such a sweetheart, I practically fell in love with him too.

This little spitfire is Roxy! She’s part chihuahua, dachshund and about 5 other breeds, with an insatiable zest for life. She certainly keeps her new family on their toes!

One more photo of Roxy, just because this head tilt is too cute to resist. I mean COME ON.

Cinda, thank you for introducing me to your gorgeous dogs! I’m excited to see you again soon! :)

Sophie & Luke, Golden Retrievers from Carlsbad

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018

When I got a call from Sophie & Luke’s dad, one of the first things he told me was that they’ve been meaning to book a photo session with their golden retrievers for a long time. And that’s the case for a lot of my clients – they’ve been looking forward to their photo session for years and years! But life tends to escape us, things get busy, and the important things get pushed to the back burner because they aren’t urgent. Photo sessions are almost never truly “urgent”, but they are incredibly important (I know, I’m biased) – so I was thrilled to hear about Sophie & Luke and start planning our long-awaited photo session together! I knew we had to plan something truly special, since these pups have been patiently waiting for their close-up for so long… :)

These adorable golden retrievers are 10 & 12 years old. Sophie is the senior girl with a delicate personality, a gorgeous white face and and wispy fur… trust me when I say she’s absolutely precious. She reserves her energy these days, and sometimes needs help getting around, but somehow her calm spirit has a regal quality to it. Unimpressed by balls and toys, the way to Sophie’s heart is through treats – whereas Luke is in love with his tennis ball and will happily run around all day chasing it! He may be 10 but he’s still a puppy at heart, that’s for sure. His thick red fur made me want to give him alllllll the snuggles! He’s a total sweetheart and was beyond fun to work with.

Our session started at the park, and finished at the beach… but an unexpected high tide quickly pushed us back up on the dry sand, instead of allowing us to play in the surf as we anticipated. So I was super proud of Luke & Sophie for enduring a few big waves before we threw in the towel – although I think overall they may have preferred the park, haha! I’m loving our images and can’t wait to share more in the future, but for now, this “sneak peek” will have to suffice!

This is Luke, and if you don’t immediately fall in love upon meeting him I don’t know what’s wrong with you.

This gorgeous girl is Sophie, basking in the sun’s glow. There’s something truly magical about the last couple hours of the day, and I think Sophie’s relaxed nature helped me capture that ephemeral mood perfectly.

Could they be more gorgeous?! I just love these happy siblings.

Remember how I said the high tide changed our plans? I’m actually glad it did – because we were able to create images like this!

Joe & Paul, thank you so much for introducing me to your beautiful dogs. I can’t wait to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)
