Pink, Achilles & Calvin – Pets from La Jolla

Friday, November 10th, 2017

Some pets are lucky enough to hit the jackpot in life: they’re adopted by a loving family, have siblings to play with, and have a great place to call home. What more could a dog or cat want, right? I’m happy to report that Pink, Achilles & Calvin have all “won the lottery”, and I’m thrilled to introduce you to them!

These pets all live in beautiful La Jolla with their parents – who are expecting a 2-legged child early next year! So we spent a nice afternoon together in their backyard, and I had a great time getting to know each of the pets’ distinctive personalities.

Calvin is thoroughly his dad’s cat. He’s about 7 years old and yes, his green eyes are that stunning in real life, too.

This is Pink! This sweet girl has spent her whole life with her mom, and they’re incredibly closely-bonded. She loves to relax in the grass and sniff around – and she goes absolutely bonkers when you bring out the treats! Her favorite snack is apples… because she’s healthy like that.

And this gorgeous hunk is Achilles, the goofball of the family. Even after 2 long walks earlier that day, he still had plenty of energy for our session – and we put it all to good use! He’s a sweet boy who came from a not-so-sweet background, so I was especially glad to see that he lucked out and found such a loving family. (Plus, he fits so well into the grey theme that Calvin & Pink started, haha!!)

Ashley & Max, thank you so much for introducing me to your family! I’m looking forward to seeing you both again soon! :)

That’s a Wrap: Photos from the 2016 Portraits for Pooches Fundraiser

Thursday, December 15th, 2016

Oh my goodness – whirlwind weekend doesn’t even begin to describe it. I was absolutely blown away this year (pun intended! ha!) by the support and generosity of the Portraits for Pooches attendees! My weekend was fully booked solid, and it was great to meet so many San Diego dogs – but it was just as fun to write a $1,500 check to the San Diego Humane Society! Not to mention the huge food donation, that the volunteers could hardly believe was so big and so high-quality! Yay! I’d definitely say this fundraiser was a massive success – who knew a mini photo session event for dogs could have gone so smoothly and so well? Haha! And after everyone has ordered their favorite photos as prints, canvases & Christmas cards, I finally have the time to share some of the gorgeous results with you! Here are just a few of the wonderful families who came out this year:

Roxy and Rowdy, cattle dog mixes, and their parents

Trooper and Tres, mixed breed dogs, and their parents

Missed out on the event this year? Don’t be (too) sad – a few Portraits for Pooches events are on my 2017 calendar! The first one is actually in January (eeeek!) and it’s benefitting California Labradors, Retrievers & More. Perfect timing for a Christmas gift! If you’d like to participate – or if you’re a representative of a local animal rescue and would like to reap the benefits of a similar event – drop me a line! You can call 619.357.6624 or email me at allison@allisonshamrell.com.

I hope to see you at a future event – whether it’s to celebrate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, National Dog Day or next year’s Christmas card photos! :)

Pet Photography in Balboa Park – Foxy & Munchkin!

Tuesday, August 16th, 2016

I spent my afternoon with two adorable, sweet, silly chihuahuas – and I’m so excited to introduce you to them!

Foxy & Munchkin are two sisters who live in San Diego, and they couldn’t be more different from one another. Foxy is outgoing, energetic, and will do anything for treats! I commented to her mom that I think she has two speeds: “go” and “go faster”! She definitely doesn’t have a “stop” button, that’s for sure, haha… it was so funny to see her race around my studio & Balboa Park all afternoon – mostly in search of treats! Munchkin, on the other hand, is a much calmer dog. She was perfectly willing to wait for the good treats to come out – not just any treats, the extra-smelly ones – and she has a dubious case of “selective hearing”. But she was lots of fun to work with, and it was definitely a fun challenge to balance her personality with Foxy’s! We started our photo session in the studio, and then spent most of our time together out at the park. Doing pet photography in Balboa Park is always a bit tricky since it’s such a popular destination, but I’m thrilled with our results and so glad we braved the crowds there! So without further ado, take a look at a few of Foxy & Munchkin’s images…

This is Munchkin, in the studio! I love her soft, cream coloring and big eyes…

… but it was at Balboa Park that her personality really came out! She posed like a pro for the camera!

This is Foxy, amidst the flowers & caught in a rare moment of standing still! (I had to make sure I was using a super-fast shutter speed with this little firecracker, haha!)

I love all the architecture at Balboa Park, and in my opinion, Foxy makes the scene even prettier.

Joanna, thank you for introducing me to your awesome little dogs! I’m excited to show you the rest of our photos soon! :)

Ruby the Chihuahua Mix in Del Mar, CA (Photos)

Tuesday, April 19th, 2016

I had the pleasure of meeting the most adorable little chihuahua mix in Del Mar recently! Ruby is a happy little dog from Vista, CA that’s always happy to be with her parents, and I met her on the beaches of Del Mar for our photo session!

Ruby is an 11-year-old chihuahua mix, and good luck guessing her other breed(s) – I personally think she’s part coyote, haha! Her soft, fluffy fur seems to overflow from every angle, and I loved seeing all the different positions her big, pointy, expressive ears could take! She loves the beach, although not for the water – this pup is definitely anti-swimming! Her survival instincts took over every time a wave came near, and she’d rush back up the sand to higher ground. That’s only if her mom didn’t scoop her up first, though – Ruby’s mom always kept a watchful eye on Ruby to make sure she was safe! In fact, some of my favorite images from this session are of the two of them, because they have the most amazing connection together. It was beautiful to watch them interact and make sure each other was happy & content. I’m sure that connection has grown even stronger in the last couple of months, since Ruby was unfortunately diagnosed with Addison’s disease, and has been spending more than her fair share of time at the vet. But she’s feeling great these days – her mom is hoping they’ll have several more years together! – and I was glad we were able to get together for this session so I could see Ruby run around the beach with plenty of energy. (Although, truth be told, Ruby’s not terribly big on running or playing fetch or getting much of a workout. She’d much rather meander around the sand, stay close to her parents and keep a much more relaxed pace! She’s at the beach for leisure, not exercise, haha!)

I just love Ruby’s warm coloring against the cool blues of the beach & sky! She’s such a cutie!

Close to her parents = Ruby’s happy place. Always.

She may be 11 years old, but she can still run down the coastline like a puppy – especially if there are treats involved, haha!

Brooke & JB, thank you so much for introducing me to your adorable little girl. I’m looking forward to seeing you all again soon! :)

Disco & Rambo, Chihuahua Mix Dogs from San Diego!

Wednesday, April 6th, 2016

You know you’re in for a fun photo session when the dogs are named Disco and Rambo! Ha!

These adorable chihuahua mix dogs are from San Diego, and I met them & their mom at Old Poway Park recently! It was a great location for a photo session, since there was plenty of lush green grass and room to run around, not to mention train tracks and flowers too – but I can’t take any credit for deciding to go there! It was totally their mom’s idea, and I’m SO glad she suggested it! The dogs loved exploring the grassy areas (they loved it a bit too much, haha – after a bit of freedom we decided that leashes might be necessary!) but they were happiest in their mom’s arms… they’re absolutely devoted to her, which was really touching to see. They’re a happy little family and I was thrilled to document their personalities!

This is Disco, and he’s outgoing & confident, always ready for the next challenge. He’s incredibly smart and has something to “say” to everyone that walks by – and honestly, he was fantastic to work with! I mean, those ears? Are you kidding me?!

cute chihuahua mix dog

This is Rambo, and unlike his namesake, he’s a timid little guy who’s not quite as outgoing as his brother. But he follows Disco’s lead in pretty much everything, and I found it really enjoyable to see their relationship – because Disco’s presence gives Rambo so much confidence! He really comes out of his shell when he’s with his brother and feels comfortable, and it was pretty adorable to see.

Seriously, this trio – they’re all gorgeous! And these pups are so cute together! :)

Veronica, thank you for a lovely afternoon! I’m excited to see you again soon & show you the rest of our images! :)
