San Diego Boxers, Gunther & Sandy! (Photos)

Thursday, April 6th, 2017

Some dogs that I work with are timid, fearful pups that need extra time & attention to feel truly comfortable… new situations make them nervous, and therefore it takes a few minutes to “warm up” to the camera. And that’s okay, since I’m pretty darn patient and I don’t mind coaxing a dog out of his or her shell.

But Gunther and Sandy are NOT that kind of dog!

These fearless San Diego boxers are confident, happy dogs with plenty of energy to spare! If they have a “shell” to break out of, they did it years ago and smashed the pieces everywhere! Haha! I met them at Mission Bay Park and they bounded out of their parents’ truck, ready to run around the grass and chase down the nearby football that a few people were playing with across the field… is it possible to be a little too outgoing? Haha! I should have known that these dogs would have no fear; they’ve been around construction sites their whole lives, surrounded by loud noises and changing environments. So we enjoyed a photo session in which I knew the dogs would be up for anything I suggested! (Anything except containing their excitement, that is!)

This is Gunther, a handsome gentleman with a penchant for purple frisbees.

And this is Sandy, a fun-loving girl with a sweet spirit. (Except when that frisbee is involved – then she’ll do her best to steal it from her brother!)

See what I mean?

I loved working with these pups… I know I’ll have fun with any session that includes a pair of San Diego boxers, but these two have such unique personalities and quirks that they kept me laughing (and on my toes!) all afternoon. They’re such great – and yet different – siblings.

Adrienne & Clay, I’m so glad I met your awesome dogs! Can’t wait to see you both again soon! :)

That’s a Wrap: Photos from the 2016 Portraits for Pooches Fundraiser

Thursday, December 15th, 2016

Oh my goodness – whirlwind weekend doesn’t even begin to describe it. I was absolutely blown away this year (pun intended! ha!) by the support and generosity of the Portraits for Pooches attendees! My weekend was fully booked solid, and it was great to meet so many San Diego dogs – but it was just as fun to write a $1,500 check to the San Diego Humane Society! Not to mention the huge food donation, that the volunteers could hardly believe was so big and so high-quality! Yay! I’d definitely say this fundraiser was a massive success – who knew a mini photo session event for dogs could have gone so smoothly and so well? Haha! And after everyone has ordered their favorite photos as prints, canvases & Christmas cards, I finally have the time to share some of the gorgeous results with you! Here are just a few of the wonderful families who came out this year:

Roxy and Rowdy, cattle dog mixes, and their parents

Missed out on the event this year? Don’t be (too) sad – a few Portraits for Pooches events are on my 2017 calendar! The first one is actually in January (eeeek!) and it’s benefitting California Labradors, Retrievers & More. Perfect timing for a Christmas gift! If you’d like to participate – or if you’re a representative of a local animal rescue and would like to reap the benefits of a similar event – drop me a line! You can call 619.357.6624 or email me at allison@allisonshamrell.com.

I hope to see you at a future event – whether it’s to celebrate Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, National Dog Day or next year’s Christmas card photos! :)

Zoey the Boxer Puppy! (San Diego Pet Photography)

Friday, March 25th, 2016

In perfect timing for National Puppy Day, I just had a photo session with the most adorable boxer puppy: Zoey!

Zoey is a 14-week-old boxer puppy who lives with her mom in San Diego, and I simply could NOT stop smiling & laughing throughout our entire session! She couldn’t be more playful – she was constantly jumping around and looking for her next treat, or fun thing to play with! She’s still learning that dishing out attitude (barking, nibbling on people, etc.) isn’t acceptable behavior, but it was all so cute coming from her that I couldn’t help but giggle every time she did it to me! (Hopefully I didn’t set her training back too far…!)

Of course, Zoey was an absolute joy to work with, and I can never get enough boxer puppy snuggles – so I hope you enjoy this “sneak peek” of a few images from our photo session!

That face. It’s too much. And that spotted-cow nose!

Zoey brought her favorite bandana as a cute prop…

… and her tutu!

But we couldn’t spend the whole session posing nicely and looking sweet… we had to play with toys too! And things got a little crazy, haha!

Janette, thank you so much for introducing me to your sweet little girl! I can’t wait to see her get big! :)

Best of 2015 – San Diego Pet Photography

Sunday, January 24th, 2016

Are you ready for this? I cannot WAIT to share these images with you!  :)  :)

2015 was an incredible year for my business: I met incredible people, fantastic dogs, and had a BLAST doing what I absolutely love to do! I’ll always be able to look back on 2015 with a big smile on my face, because although it had its ups and downs (just like any year), I have to admit that there were way more “ups” and happy times than anything else. So of course I couldn’t properly say goodbye to one of the most amazing years of my life without a “Best of” blog post – because I want to share a tiny fraction of how GREAT this year was with you! So I really feel like this blog post contains a piece of my heart… not to wax poetic, but the people and dogs in these photos really do mean the world to me, and I’ll always be grateful that we crossed paths in 2015. Did all these sessions go 100% smoothly? Nope! (Hello rain delays!) Did all these dogs really love being in front of the camera? Definitely not! (Some adored being the center of attention, and some definitely took some warming up!) But I think we still ended up with spectacular results from each & every session, and to me, that’s the most important thing, because then my clients can walk away happy. And I think they all did! :)

So here are all the pets I photographed in full-length photo sessions in 2015. I picked out my 3 favorite images from each session – not the easiest thing to do!! – and for the sake of simplicity, I refrained from sharing the details of each pet’s story here, but you can always search the blog for details on any pet if you’re curious.

Whew! What a year! :)

Photo Session with San Diego Boxers Howie & Bernie!

Monday, August 3rd, 2015

My photo session with Howie & Bernie, the San Diego boxers, was so much fun! I absolutely loved working with these two dogs – perhaps because they’re near two different ends of the age spectrum (Howie is 8 years and Bernie is 5 months), and it was a fun challenge to work with an older dog at the same time as a puppy. I think their parents feel a bit like they’re in a time warp, of sorts; it’s been so long since Howie was a puppy, but now Bernie is testing their patience all over again with her classic puppy behavior! As all puppy owners know, silence is not golden, it means someone is getting into trouble, haha… and while they say they don’t remember Howie being such a troublemaker, I’m sure it’s a fun (if exhausting!) experience to relive those days! I’m betting Howie will teach Bernie all the ways of the world, with his 8 years of wisdom, as she gets older (and calmer). But in the meantime, our photo session was a blast – dogs never stay small for very long, and I love having the opportunity to capture puppies and their spunky young spirits!

I think I’ll always remember Howie as one of the most-easy-to-photograph dogs I’ve ever worked with. (Thanks, buddy!) I say this because his favorite thing to do was simply lay in the grass! I think in another life, Howie could have been Jimmy Buffett… this dog loves to relax!

san diego boxers

Bernie, on the other hand… :)

san diego boxer dog

These two would play-fight all day long, if they could! They’ve (mostly) learned each other’s boundaries, so it was pretty funny to hear them growling & barking at one another as they ran all over the park!

san diego boxers

And one more photo, just because I can’t resist… those puppy wrinkles are killing me.

Debbra & Chuck, thank you for a fun-filled afternoon! I had a great time with all four of you, and I’m excited to show you all of our photos soon! :)
