Barley & Harper, the Red Boston Terriers! (Photos)

Monday, November 21st, 2016

Barley & Harper are two adorable red Boston terriers, and we recently shared a fun photo session in North County!

These two pups’ names are inspired by barley & hops, two of the essential ingredients in beer – and as soon as I heard this, I knew I’d get along with their parents, haha! We all love craft beer, the more local the better – and thankfully San Diego has plenty of dog-friendly breweries to visit. When these dogs aren’t hanging out by the bar, they also love to go camping and play at the dog beach. In fact, they’re great little breed ambassadors! Their parents say they get plenty of attention by people interested in Boston terriers (especially people who don’t know that red Boston terriers exist), and at the end of our session we actually met a couple who are considering adopting a couple of Bostons in the future! So Barley & Harper played with them for a few minutes, and they definitely won two more fans over to the breed! And I can’t blame them; they’re such sweet, playful dogs! On top of their awesome personalities, it turns out, these pups also pose for photos like total pros – I’m so excited to share their images with you!

This is Harper, the 1-year-old girl. She’s a little princess and isn’t shy to tell everyone what she wants! (Which is usually “more treats!”) She was a perfect little lady for our photo session, except for a brief moment in which she proved that she can’t be trusted off-leash… and I just couldn’t get over how expressive her little face is!

And this blast of energy is Barley! He’s only a few months older than his sister, and happens to be obsessed with his ball. Such a fast dog! And just as enthusiastic about his treats, too, haha!

Oh my goodness, you two. Stop it. Way too cute.

Steph & Sven, thank you so much for a wonderful afternoon! I’m looking forward to seeing you both again soon! :)

Dog Days of Summer 2012 – the First Annual Event!

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

When I was first asked to be on the planning committee for Dog Days of Summer, I had NO IDEA what a huge event and ridiculous amount of fun it would turn out to be! (Plus, all the planning meetings at La Hacienda Mexican restaurant were pretty delicious/wonderful too.) We designed the day to be similar to the Gulf Breeze Pet Fest or Pensacola’s huge Barktoberfest, but with one big difference: all proceeds would benefit the American Cancer Society. Human & canine cancer is so prevalent and any donation we could make would be worth the effort – so after several months of planning, August 18 was the big day! And guess what: the results are in, and we raised over $1000 for the American Cancer Society! YAY!

This post is full of just a few dogs from that day who stopped by to say hello! These photos will also be used to make a 2013 calendar, the proceeds from which will also benefit the American Cancer Society. (If you keep scrolling down, you’ll see some of the funny themes and props we put together for each month!) Stay tuned to the blog and the Facebook page for more info on how to get your copy!

Let’s start with a photo of the head organizer’s dog! This is Rusty, Becky’s boy, and he’s only about a year old – but I photographed him when he was a tiny puppy! It was so much fun to see him “all grown up” and much bigger than I remember!

This pomeranian is appropriately-named Bear.

This is cute little Dixie the basset hound!

Serious contender for cutest puppy at the event: Fiona the shepherd mix. I think she looks a bit like my Bailey! And WHAT a smile!

Rocky is another one of the organizer’s dogs – you really should check out Premier Pet Grooming if you’re in Milton!

Conway is a chug (chihuahua/pug mix), don’t you love that underbite? And Sonny the lab mix will help us introduce the many props and costumes for each month…

Stiff competition to win the month of May is Bitsy the chihuahua, and at 17 years old this little trooper is also one of my past clients!

For October/Halloween we have Dozer the Therapy Dog, who has a super-busy Facebook page! He’s pretty famous!

Bear is Becky’s grand-dog, and he let us wrap him up in red tulle for December/Christmas! Look at that sweet face. That’s a rottweiler stocking to the right of him.

Whew, there are a TON of photos in this post! But if you can’t get enough, check out the full day’s gallery here: http://proofs.allisonshamrell.com. More importantly, a HUGE thank-you goes out to everyone that came on the 18th, whether it was for several hours or just a short time! We really appreciate your support, and 100% of your donation went to the American Cancer Society! Thank you so much – and be on the lookout for more info about next year’s event!

Happy Dogs & Shy Dogs: Marlee & Amia

Wednesday, July 18th, 2012

Let me introduce you to two dogs who are total opposites – around strangers, at least. Marlee is a bouncy 8-month-old golden retriever and couldn’t be more friendly! She’ll “attack” anyone who comes to the door with kisses and tail wags. Amia, on the other hand, is a much more reserved Boston terrier. She’d prefer to keep her distance, and it’s a little more difficult to gain her trust.

I absolutely love it when dogs open up to me, and with dogs like Marlee it’s incredibly easy, but with Amia it can be more challenging. So I’m always thrilled when I walk away with images like the ones below, because it means all the steps and precautions I take to let dogs get comfortable with me, really work! (I study dog behavior, I meet dogs before their session, I warm them up to the camera slowly, etc.) I hope their mom Jane sees her dogs in these photos not as through the lens of a different person, but simply as she sees her dogs every day. Enjoy the photos!

Thanks again Jane – I’ll talk to you soon! (and don’t worry – I have plenty more photos of Marlee positioned more than just a few inches away from the camera!)

Sneak Peek: Domino & Gumbo ~ {Pensacola Beach, FL Pet Photography by Allison Shamrell}

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Here is the Sneak Peek from a fun session with Kimberly and her Boston Terrier mix Domino, as well as Sally and her shih tzu Gumbo! As usual, these are just a few photos from what I’ve edited so far… but they’re definitely some of my favorites!

Let me tell you what – the weather really did its best to keep us from having a session! We had to reschedule to get away from a dark, cloudy sky, and then the wind practically pushed us off the beach once we finally got out there! But Kimberly and Sally were troopers, and Domino and Gumbo were up for anything! We had a great time and I’m VERY excited to reveal all the images.

Enjoy your Sneak Peek, Kimberly and Sally – I’ll be in touch soon!
