Willow, the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever Puppy from Dana Point

Tuesday, December 7th, 2021

Meet Willow, one of the sweetest & most beautiful dogs I’ve ever had the privilege of photographing! I was veryyy tempted to steal this pup and take her back home with me, haha – especially since it’s not every day that I get to photograph a Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever! She is a total sweetheart and loves to make new friends. Willow is actually her mom’s first dog, and they are already off to a great start! I loved seeing the bond that they have already made. And if this is just the beginning of their relationship, then I can’t wait to see what it grows and blossoms into from here!

We started our session at Balboa Park, which turned out to be a wonderful (if incredibly busy) spot. Despite all the activity & distractions, she was a perfect angel throughout the afternoon, and did just about everything we asked her to do. I was impressed with her obedience for such a young pup at just 5 months old! There’s a lot of time and work that go into obedience training and it can feel like you’re making progress at a snail’s pace. Puppies have a short attention span and it’s a big world for them to figure out (and be distracted by), so training can be extremely challenging. It takes time, energy and effort – and Willow’s mom has done SUCH a good job staying consistent! I’m here to tell you that all the hours they’ve put in together have paid off – not only for her, but it made my job a lot easier too, haha! Willow’s focus allowed us to get a great variety of portraits. The park was a spectacular setting with all of its bright colors, too; it worked well with Willow’s ruby red fur and I’m so glad we started our session there.

We eventually headed to the studio, where the sights & sounds of the park faded and we got to slow down & relax a bit. I remember feeling pretty excited throughout our photo session because of how well everything was going, and I figured the portraits were not going to disappoint. So here’s Willow’s sneak peek… you be the judge! 😉

This sweet face is Willow!

As soon as I saw these flowers, I knew Willow belonged amongst them. Thankfully, she was willing to entertain all of our crazy ideas!

She was a natural in the studio. And I think we all enjoyed the change of pace from the park!

I’m excited to see how Willow and her mom’s relationship continues to develop and deepen over the years. They are such a cute pair! Training aside, they simply have a great bond, and it’s always so lovely to see a person and dog in sync with one another.

Emily, thank you so much for visiting the studio all the way from Dana Point! I’m excited to share the rest of our images with you very soon!

Levi & Aura, San Diego Border Collies

Wednesday, June 30th, 2021

I’m so excited to share this fun photo session of Levi and Aura with you all!

Levi the border collie was adopted a couple of years ago, back when he was a little puppy. After he & his mom got to know each other, she later learned that he is actually deaf in one of his ears. As some of you may know (I didn’t!) the way that dogs’ ears work is basically by each ear “covering” 180 degrees of where sounds are coming from, so as you can guess, dogs really rely on being able to use each of their ears. Since he wasn’t able to hear that well, as a puppy it often seemed to Levi that people were “sneaking up on him” – poor thing! – which understandably led to some trust issues. And as a puppy he often wasn’t too sure of himself, most likely as a result of his hearing issue, but his mom took the time to really work with him, build trust, and help him flourish! With lots of love and training, he has made TREMENDOUS strides in his journey. He’s a much more confident dog now, I’m told – and he & his mom have a beautiful relationship built on a solid foundation of trust. He absolutely adores her, and it was beautiful to see their bond.

Fast forward two years – and we have an exciting new addition to the family! Levi and his mom recently adopted a border collie puppy named Aura! She is simply precious, and has really brought out the “puppy” in Levi as well. Aura is a silly, squirmy girl and is the confident yin to Levi’s cautious yang. She is SO playful, cute, energetic, spunky…the list goes on! The two pups have an amazing sibling bond as well; Levi has helped teach her things like sit and stay on command. So what’s funny about their relationship is that while Aura has learned tricks and good behavior from her big brother, he has learned how to loosen up and play because of her. Their mom has also spent a lot of time training with Aura, and I was truly impressed with her obedience. (It helps to be on “puppy maternity leave” and be able to truly focus on the two of them!)

Our location of choice was the Spanish Art Village in Balboa Park. The entire time we had people come up and say, “Oh look at those cute dogs!”, etc. – so I’m pretty sure their mom gets stopped alllllllll the time. We then headed to San Dieguito County Park and let the dogs stretch their legs and play fetch. Levi always wants to “work” and have a job to do, but when we got there he couldn’t help himself: he actually ran straight into the pond! He was definitely not supposed to do that, but we couldn’t help but laugh when he let loose! It was so much fun to see them play around, and see two very different personalities. This truly was an awesome photo session with a tight knit little family. They have such a beautiful life ahead of them, and I’m excited to see what’s to come!

This is Levi – isn’t he gorgeous?!

Daisy, Hank, & Rusty – 3 Little Dogs from Mira Mesa

Wednesday, November 20th, 2019

I couldn’t have asked for a sweeter family to work with than the Stone family! They were such a pleasure to get to know, and during the session they were up for anything! I really appreciated how they were willing to go with the flow and listen to what the dogs needed and wanted to do during our time together. I always try to go into photo sessions with a plan, but often times the plan simply falls apart – which is nobody’s fault of course, that’s just dogs being dogs doing what they want to do! (And usually we end up with something much better than my plan anyway, haha!) But their willingness to just “roll with it” made this photo session a whole lot of fun. Maybe that made things a little chaotic at times, but I think this session serves as proof that sometimes it doesn’t look like much is “happening” to the bystander; it probably doesn’t feel or seem like we’re creating artwork. But oftentimes all the elements come together in the final images, and I am definitely loving these results!

They chose a great spot in Mira Mesa that I’ve never been to before (which was super exciting for me, haha)! It was a community park that was totally deserted – so. much. fun. We were able to play fetch on the baseball field, run around in the grass, and watch the dogs just let loose!

Daisy is the only girl of the pack – girl power! She is a little fireball and is the one who likes to live life at HIGH speed. She was super excited to be at the Mira Mesa park to play fetch. And oh man… she can really move! I was totally impressed by her athleticism. If I had to guess, I think playing fetch and running around in the empty field was her favorite part of the afternoon by far. This girl loves her tennis balls!

And Daisy wanted to make sure you know how much she loves chasing her ball – so here she is just moments after the above image!

Her brother Hank is a little cutie too! He is a Chihuahua mix and allllll personality. He has this sweet-and-sometimes-sassy little attitude that somehow comes through no matter what he’s doing. He is not shy about what he wants and doesn’t want! And he was a joy to be around, even if he did keep me on my toes. :)

And last but certainly not least, they recently adopted a new dog named Rusty. He is a beagle who has lived his whole life in a laboratory. Unfortunately, beagles get tested on a lot for different products, and Rusty hasn’t had the easiest or happiest life. The good news is is that these days if he’s enjoying himself you can hardly even tell what he’s been through! He’s a total sweetheart and really enjoys being around people. He’s happy when meeting new people and a lot of things are going on and he gets to be social and explore. I love that about him – talk about giving the world a second chance despite what has been done to him! I think he is just amazing and so is his family for adopting him and giving him a life full of love. He’s fitting in really well with his new family – in fact, he has been given the award of #1 couch potato! If he can’t be out meeting new people, his idea of a good time is sitting on the couch, relaxing. (Can’t say I blame him, haha!) So the fact that we were out in the park in Mira Mesa for a photo session… nottttt really high on his priority list. He was a little slow to get into the rhythm of things – but as soon as we got to Balboa Park he absolutely came alive! His tail was just wagging and he was even “high stepping” a little bit. It was an immediate difference – so cool to see!

Thank you Katherine and Neil for a lovely afternoon with your 3 amazing dogs! I can’t wait for you to see all of our images soon!

Rocky the Labrador Mix at Balboa Park (Photos)

Monday, December 11th, 2017

I can’t tell you how thrilled I was to get together with Rocky the labrador mix at Balboa Park the other day! Repeat clients are SO much fun to work with, and since I already know Rocky’s likes/dislikes/personality we were able to jump right into the session without wasting any time. So it was no surprise when, just like in his last session, Rocky posed like a total pro. He’d do anything for his mom – and the laser light she carries around for him! (Yes, I said laser light – maybe Rocky is part labrador, part cat?!)

So we visited all the most scenic parts of Balboa Park for our session – the gardens, the lily pond, the theater, and even the Spanish Village. And we have some gorgeous images as a result!! I’m excited to share these with you, and even more excited to share the rest of the photos with Rocky’s mom!

In-between greeting his many admirers, Rocky posed for a few photos near the lily pond… Balboa Park was surprisingly crowded during our session, but he didn’t let the crowds distract him. (Even when a few dozen teenagers came over to “awwwww” at how handsome he is! And I mean, who can blame them, right?!)

Rocky had a scary visit to the vet recently – I got chills when his mom told me about it. Thankfully, he’s fine now, but for a generally-healthy dog it was a big surprise… because no one likes to be told that their dog needs to spend the night at the vet’s office. But he’s back to his healthy, cheerful self now – thank goodness!!

Oh Rocky. You’re adorable.

Sara – I still can’t believe December snuck up on us so fast! It was so great to spend time with you & Rocky again – I’ll see you soon! :)

Photos of Aubrey & Porter, San Diego Dogs in Balboa Park

Sunday, October 29th, 2017

I always love meeting dogs with unique, interesting names. So how cool is it that Aubrey & Porter are named after the cities where their mom found & adopted them?!

Aubrey is a beautiful, silly, always-smiling labrador. Her mom attended a wedding several years ago in Aubrey, Texas, and little puppy Aubrey happened to wander into the reception. So her mom (and a few friends) “smuggled” Aubrey back home! Unfortunately, we scheduled this photo session in a hurry since Aubrey recently got some bad news at the vet… but about a week before our session, that diagnosis got a lot more positive! I’m happy to report that Aubrey is feeling good and doesn’t have to worry about the c-word anytime soon. :)

Her little brother is Porter, a chihuahua mix with adorably floppy ears and plenty of attitude. Although he’s typically a little slower to warm up to new situations & people, the treats we brought to the session helped him quickly overcome his shyness! And yes, he’s from a place named Porter. (Technically Porterville, right Megan?)

We started our photo session in the studio and soon headed over to Balboa Park. Although the forecast said it would be 100 degrees that afternoon (!!!), the weather cooled down surprisingly nicely – thank goodness, I mean it’s October after all, haha! – so I had a great time with these awesome San Diego dogs!

This is Aubrey, in the gorgeous afternoon light! With her trademark flower on her collar, of course.
