Portraits for Pooches: Let’s Fly in July! ~ (Pet Photography Mini-Sessions)

Tuesday, July 12th, 2016

Hello everyone! A big event is coming up, and I’m so excited to share it with you!

Many of you participated in the last round of Portraits for Pooches, a series of pet photography mini-sessions that I’m hosting on behalf of the San Diego Humane Society. Now it’s time for the next installment – and I’ve put together a fun aviation theme to go with it! So whether you’d like to pretend that your pooch is a pilot, or keep things simple and get a head-start on your Christmas cards this year (eeek!), there’s an option for everyone. Here are all the details!

You can enjoy a professional photo session with your pets, and half of the proceeds go straight to the Humane Society!

As the graphics above describe, here are all the details about this Portraits for Pooches event:

~  $99 for a 15-minute photo session! It’ll be un-rushed and stress-free, not to mention lots of fun!

~  July 30 & 31, 2016 – perfect for celebrating National Mutt Day on July 31st!

~  Everything is happening in the studio, at 3251 Adams Avenue, in Normal Heights, San Diego.

~  You get to pick out your favorite portrait and keep it as a high-resolution digital image, with a full print release for sharing, downloading, and printing copies.

~  You’ll have at least 10 images to choose from; it’s a taste of the custom photography experience!

~  The whole family is welcome to come! (please note: up to 2 pets are allowed per time slot)

~  Booking is open NOW!

So here’s how to book your mini-session:

Of course, during each of the pet photography mini-sessions, I’ll create more than just one photo. Participants will actually have over ten finalized images to browse! So for anyone that would like to sample a few products from my archival-quality product line, I’ve put together a few product collections & options:

Mini-Sessions! (San Diego Pet Photography Event)

Friday, June 5th, 2015

I have to admit, my recent mini-session event was an experiment.

I haven’t put together anything on this scale – an entire weekend of back-to-back-to-back photo sessions – in a long time, and never in California. So I really wasn’t sure how things would go… would I be able to stick to my schedule? Would there be lots of interest, or not very much? Would the dogs be able to work in a 15-minute time limit? Would I?

Well… as it turns out, the event was a huge success!!! Yay! I couldn’t be more thrilled! The weather was absolutely lovely (slightly overcast, perfect for the park!), we were able to stick to the tight schedule (with help from my awesome hubby!), and the dogs all posed like total pros! 15 minutes turned out to be plenty of time for a mini-session; I was able to easily deliver a variety of 10+ images to each client, just like I promised. (Which is a small number compared to the few dozen that my full-length session clients see, but hey, for a minimal investment of time, I was pretty happy with the results!)

By Sunday night, I was just as drained as my camera’s empty battery… we were both exhausted! But my mini-session clients have been loving their images, and I’ve really enjoyed giving them a taste of the award-winning photography experience that I’ve become known for. All in all, it was a fabulous weekend – and I simply can’t resist sharing a few of my favorite images with you! So here’s a very small selection of mini-session photos! Enjoy!

This is Zephyr! Isn’t he handsome? I just love the way he looks lovingly up at his mom.

This is Bourbon, the Great Dane – a stunner if I ever met one!

This gorgeous mixed-breed mutt is Sienna. I can’t get enough of her unique coloring!

Gizmo was more than ready to run all around the park for us!

So was Murphy, the golden retriever – as long as you’d throw his frisbee! This pup is frisbee-obsessed!

He’s also quite gorgeous in black & white.

And Molly the goldendoodle is, too!

Here’s Molly with her parents – she’s such a little lady!

Okay, okay, one more of Molly – because she does the cutest trick! She carries her own leash! What a handy dog, haha!

After spending Saturday in the park, I headed inside to the studio on Sunday. This adorable matching duo is Kinlie & Karma!

… it wasn’t long, though, before Kinlie was giving me attitude. :)

And this little nugget is Mitzi…

… she and her French bulldog siblings all visited the studio! This “butt shot” was a special request from her mom, and I love how it turned out, haha!

And although you may not think of French bulldogs as athletes, Mitzi will do anything for her toy – including jump high in the air!

Okay – you made it to the bottom of this post – so are you ready for the good news?

We had so much fun over the mini-session weekend that I’ve decided to do it again! Mark your calendar for November 21 & 22! I’ve planned another mini-session weekend that’s just in time for including your pets in this year’s Christmas cards… and I couldn’t be more excited! We’re bound to have a blast! :)

Birthday Giveaway!

Tuesday, September 2nd, 2014

It’s that time of year again! Yahoo!

My birthday is September 3rd, and ever since I started my business, I’ve made it a tradition to give away a photo session every year to celebrate! The only catch: the recipient pet has to be a certain breed!

In 2012, I gave away a session to a Bernese Mountain Dog, Juno. (Juno also brought her sisters, a labrador and a golden retriever, along for the session!) In 2013, I had just moved to San Diego and offered a session to a very rare breed of dog, the Afghan hound. Apparently it was too soon & too rare, because I didn’t receive any entries at all… which really surprised me, but hey, I learned what not to do! (aka, move to a new city and make a near-impossible request, haha!)

So this year, I have a new breed on my mind… one that I’ve wanted to photograph for quite a while now. It’s on my “wish list”, so to speak, and now I have the opportunity to ask the universe to make it a reality. (You could say it’s a birthday present to myself!) So… drumroll please… this year’s birthday giveaway “casting call” is for…

A setter!

I would love to work with a setter – any kind! There are English, Gordon & Irish Setters, all of which are stunningly gorgeous. I just can’t get enough of their long, flowing fur & expressive faces.

So do you have a setter? Here’s what to do:

~   The owner of the dog should email me at Allison@Allisonshamrell.com with a quick description of the dog, and a photo too (it can be a quick snapshot)

~   Extra credit: include why you’d like to win the session!

~   Send that email by the end of the week (Friday, Sept. 5 @ 5:00 pm)

~   That’s it! I’ll pick a winner by the end of the weekend!

Don’t have a setter, but want to make sure one lucky family can have a great experience?

~   Share this blog post with your favorite setter owner

~   Or just copy & paste www.allisonshamrellblog.com/birthday-dog-photo-session-giveaway to your Facebook page, to reach even more people!

(New to this blog, and want to see what all the fuss is about? Click here to see my photography portfolio.)

I’m so excited to work with a setter and meet a new family… I’m happy to cover the session fee, and I just know we’re going to have a great time! Good luck to all the entrants!  :)

One-Year Anniversary Celebration of the San Diego Studio!

Sunday, June 15th, 2014

Hooray! I’m so excited! Today (June 15, 2014) is the one-year anniversary celebration of signing the lease and getting the keys to 3251 Adams Avenue, the location that I picked for my studio here in San Diego!  I can hardly believe it’s been a whole year of living & doing business in America’s Finest City… and honestly, compared to this moment last year, it feels like a lot has changed. I actually have friends in town, haha (we moved here without knowing anyone!), I have an employee (yay for Haley!), and an entirely new marketing plan for this changing & growing business. Sometimes it’s easy to look back and only see the challenges that I’ve faced along the way – because it hasn’t been an easy ride – but there have been lots of little victories too! And today is for celebrating those moments and clients that have been the inspiration behind Allison Shamrell Pet Photography‘s first year in San Diego!

First things first: the prizes up for grabs! I have First Place, Second Place and Third Place goodies for a few very lucky winners! Drumroll please…

anniversary celebration grand prize

This is The Beagle Package, as outlined on the main website, and the only “catch” is that it has to take place in the Embarcadero, just south of Seaport Village! This is a location that I’ve been dying to photograph ever since moving here and seeing it for the first time – the well-kept grass, the big old trees, the striking city skyline in the background – I think it’ll be an incredibly dynamic place for a session, so I’m treating one lucky first-place winner and their dog(s) to this $175 value!

(This session covers one hour of session time & up to two dogs. More dogs and/or time can be added on for an additional fee.)

And the next prize…

anniversary celebration giveaway

This is another BIG prize, and it’s for TWO winners! It brings the cost of The Beagle Package down to just $75, for example… or you can spend it on products after your Dalmatian Package, which already comes with $100 in print credit, for a total product credit of $200! And with this, you’ll have the flexibility to go anywhere in San Diego for your session – whether you’d prefer your house, my studio, your dog’s favorite park, or anywhere in between. If you met me at the big San Diego Humane Society Walk for Animals event a few weeks ago, you know this is the same prize that a lucky drawing winner scored that day!

And the final prize…

anniversary third place prize

This is a lovely fine art print, 8×10″ in size, that’s mounted to styrene (a firm, acid-free backing material) that helps the print stay strong & flat. The styrene adds thickness, so you can either place this print in a frame, or prop it up on an easel for even simpler display! Either way, it’s a beautiful piece with the quote “Dogs are not our whole lives, but they make our lives whole” by Roger Caras. And guess what: the design will be revealed on the Facebook page tomorrow, so be sure to “like” the page to see the finished piece! THREE people can win this prize!

Here’s how to enter:

Simply leave a comment on this blog post with your name, your pet’s name(s), their breed(s), and why you want to win!

Win a bonus entry by sharing this blog post on Facebook, too! Just leave a separate comment saying that you did so.

The final drawing will happen on Tuesday, June 17 at 5:00 pm, and winners will be contacted via email.

Good luck!

In addition to planning this giveaway, I’ve been reflecting a bit, too. Back when I first got the keys to the studio, I wrote a blog post which you can see here about how excited I was for the future, and everything else I was going through. Part of that post says:

I’m feeling a lot of different emotions right now – probably what every photographer that’s opened a studio goes through. I’m scared the space won’t live up to the ideas I have in my head if I can’t decorate it well enough. I’m scared for my upcoming bill at Home Depot. I’m scared that the investment will start to weigh on me. I’m scared of a break-in. But at the same time, I’m so excited to have a space in the community where I can invite people, clients & dogs over! I’m excited to be able to simply say, yes, I have a studio! I’m excited to decorate & design it, and I’m excited to have a place that can do everything I need it for: client meetings, shoots, ordering sessions, etc. Honestly, I’m a little bit excited to separate my business life from my personal life, because – not gonna lie – my time-management skills could use a bit of work (coughfacebookcough) and I think having limited access to my files at home might be just the push I need to be as productive as possible while working.

Looking back, I’m happy to say that the studio has lived up to the ideas I had in my head. The investment was a big one, and my Home Depot bills certainly added up, but all the progress slowly came to a close, and now I’m proud for my clients to visit my San Diego studio on a daily basis. Not to mention – I’ve met some incredible pets and seen some great photo sessions happen here! Check out just a few of the animals I’ve worked with this year, in & out of the studio:

So of course, there’s no other way I can finish this blog post than by profusely thanking the clients that I’ve had the pleasure of meeting this past year. There would be no anniversary celebration without you. Thank you – each of you – for everything, because while I feel honored to have given you memories & artwork of your family, I feel like you’ve given me so much more. Thank you.

The Muttropolis Party for Valentine’s Day in La Jolla

Monday, February 17th, 2014

Muttropolis is a fabulous local pet boutique in the San Diego area; they regularly host parties & get-togethers for its pet-loving customers at their different locations (in La Jolla & Solana Beach), and I love stopping in whenever I’m nearby to check out all their cute products. (It’s where I bought Bailey’s most recent leash!) So I was thrilled when, several weeks ago, I received an email from their marketing team, asking if I could photograph the Muttropolis Party celebrating Valentine’s Day at their La Jolla shop! Naturally, I was happy to join in the fun & meet all their 4-legged customers. (Okay, I had a pretty good time meeting the 2-legged ones, too! Haha!) It was a relaxing Sunday soiree, complete with goodies to eat & drink – and plenty of treats for the dogs too, of course. Check out a few photos from the day!

And of course, all their Valentines-themed products were on display!

Adorable pink leather collars. Love!

In addition to all the seasonal party decor, I just love the way their shops are set up all the time. Can you believe they filled a paw-printed bathtub with different products? Shampoos, mostly! Haha! I don’t know anything about retail design or in-store marketing, but whatever they’re doing, it works – because I wanted to buy pretty much everything in the store.

And here are some of the fluffy faces I saw at the Muttropolis party! Toto is the adorable dog on the left, and Sakura (who knows trick commands in Japanese!) is on the right.

Muttropolis dogs

Parker & Star are siblings, and I think I saw them walk away from the event with a couple of brand-new beds! Lucky dogs!

Deacon is the handsome old man on the left, and Reagan & Versace (cousins!) are the posers on the right.

Versace is such a little cutie. And I love this outtake of Reagan!

As the party was winding down, I spotted these collars in a display case near the register – do they look familiar? Zoey the chihuahua was sporting one for her session a few months ago! I just love them – they’re beautiful & sparkly without being obnoxiously bling-y. (In my opinion, at least!)

Thanks again to the Muttropolis marketing team for inviting me to this fabulous party! Here’s to next time, when I get to take more photos of your monkey – I mean, doggy customers! :)
